Oxidation, Inflammation and Saffron
October 11, 2022
Hello

Oxidation, Inflammation and Saffron

Oxidative stress and inflammation both play a major role in the progression of age related macular degeneration (AMD), a degenerative retinal condition that can lead to the loss of central vision along with other vision changes.

Slowing down the acceleration of these processes by targeting free radicals and controlling inflammation is important in the prevention and treatment of AMD.

Eye Health Benefits of Saffron

Saffron is a spice with a complex chemical composition that contains the antioxidant and neuroprotective carotenoids crocin and crocetin among other compounds such as safranal. These compounds bear structural similarities to other well-known natural antioxidant substances, such as zeaxanthin, with strong antioxidative, cellular and neuro-protective properties.

"Saffron acts at different levels directly as an antioxidant but also by regulating many genes and protein synthesis. Neuronal death, neuroinflammation and morphological disorganization are reduced, and the progression of the degenerative pathology is slowed down."

Dr Mahmood Piraee, the founder of Groupe Persavita Inc, (Montreal, Canada), a registered pharmacist in Quebec, Canada who completed his PhD in molecular and cellular biology (Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada) shares with us how eye health nutrients may protect the retina and the lens of the eye from damage caused by oxidation and inflammation.
