Telescopic Implant - Tiny But Mighty

End stage macular degeneration leaves patients with a blind spot or dark, gray-black spot right in the middle of their vision. This type of vision loss cannot be corrected with drugs or surgery and leads to the inability to recognize faces, watch TV or to read. But a tiny telescope implanted inside the eye may be able to change that.

Developed by Dr. Lipshitz, the implant received FDA approval in 2010 for the treatment of end stage age related macular degeneration. The telescope replaces the existing lens and magnifies images 2.7x.

It works by directing light from the new lens to healthier parts of the macula. Implanted in only one eye so that one eye functions for peripheral vision while the other eye is used for close up vision. After the implant the patient receives training from low vision specialists in how to use the new implanted telescope.
