Pixium Vision Retinal Implant Research September 29, 2021 |
Hello Pixium Vision Retinal Implant ResearchThe first successful implant of the Pixium Vision chip has been achieved in Germany as part of the PRIMAvera clinical trial. Several more sites will be opening up in Germany for a total recruitment of 38 participants. The first U.S. patient has been implanted with the retinal implant device at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and five patients with advanced dry age related macular degeneration have been implanted in France. What is the PRIMA Pixium Vision System? The Bionic Vision Restoration System, by Pixium Vision, received approval in the fall of 2017 from French regulators for the implant of a retinal chip in patients who have advanced dry macular degeneration (AMD). The chip is surgically placed in the subretinal space and works in conjunction with a headworn camera and a small data transmitter.José-Alain Sahel, M.D., director of the UPMC Eye Center, Eye and Ear Foundation chair of ophthalmology, and professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine who initiated the trial at UPMC states, “We are proud to be the first center in the United States to test this next generation retinal implant that could help treat an incurable disease like AMD.” Watch a short video and learn how this technology works to stimulate the retina in a new way to improve vision:
