Hello How does Macular Degeneration Affect One's Driving?A major concern for those who have been diagnosed with macular degeneration is can I keep driving? How does macular degeneration affect one's driving ability and when will I know if it's time to stop driving are also commonly asked questions.
There are certain vision changes that are common to age related macular degeneration (AMD) but everyone's eyes are different and everyone progresses differently. Some people may have dry macular degeneration that remains stable for years without progressing to wet AMD. Other's may suffer vision losses quite quickly. Here are some things to consider regarding driving and AMD. 1. What stage is your macular degeneration? 2. What form of AMD do you have? The dry form or wet AMD 3. Does one eye have "good vision" or are there visual losses in both eyes 4. Do you have other eye conditions like cataracts or glaucoma 5. What are your driving conditions? Is it nighttime, rainy, or snowy? For most people in the United States, the loss of a driver's license and the ability to go any where at any time, is one of the most difficult adjustments to a visual disability.
