It's impossible to understand macular degeneration without a basic understanding of the macula. For such a small spot, about the size of a stamp, it plays an very integral part in our vision.

Thanks to a high concentration of cone cells we are able to experience vision that is clear, sharp and distinct. Thanks to the macula lutea, a yellowish spot on the retina, our vision is protected internally much like sunglasses protect our eyes externally.

The thickness of the macular pigment is an indicator of the health of the macula and one's risk of macular degeneration - the thicker the pigment the more protection and the lower the risk.
