Cataracts and Macular Degeneration: How They Impact Your Vision

The incidence of developing cataracts and macular degeneration for Americans increases as one ages. The prevalence of cataracts jumps from 20% in those that are 60-69 to 68.3% in those over the age of 80.

While the prevalence of intermediate age related macular degeneration (AMD) is 6.4% for those in their sixties, it jumps to 23.6% in those 80 or older. It is not uncommon for someone to have cataracts and macular degeneration at the same time in one or both eyes. Many patients are often being monitored or receiving treatment for their cloudy lens and for their AMD.

Macular Degeneration or Cataracts?

Understanding how these two eye conditions share similarities in their symptoms and if, or how, treatment can affect the progression of these vision robbers may give you some insight into your own visual health or treatment decisions.
