|A computer screen magnifier makes it easier to use your computer to read text, look at images or to send e-mails. The most well known magnifying and reading software is ZoomText.|
Rebecca White from Ai Squared shares with us how this software can be used as a screen magnifier and as a text to speech program. Find out how this computer low vision aid works and the many benefits of using their software to help you utilize the many different uses of your computer.
1. Briefly explain to us what ZoomText is all about.
Do you strain to see what’s on your computer screen? Have trouble reading text, recognizing pictures and graphics, and finding what you’re looking for? With ZoomText, seeing and hearing everything on your computer screen is clearer than ever. ZoomText is a powerful computer access solution that was designed for the visually impaired.
The software consists of two adaptive technologies—screen magnification and screen reading. ZoomText allows you to see and hear everything on your computer screen, providing complete access to applications, documents, email, and the Internet. ZoomText comes in two different versions – Magnifier, a stand-alone screen magnifier and Magnifier/Reader, a combination magnifier and screen reader.
2. Why would someone with macular degeneration be interested in this software?
ZoomText offers incremental magnification up to 36 times. This allows you to customize how you view the screen, and to increase or decrease magnification depending on your needs. And you’ll enjoy perfect text clarity thanks to ZoomText’s exclusive xFont magnification technology. In addition to magnification, screen colors are adjustable to help eliminate screen glare and help you to use the computer more efficiently. Sometimes text on the screen is just way too tiny or your eyes are tired from a whole day of computer use, so ZoomText can also read aloud any text on screen right through speakers or headphones. This reading capability can be turned on and off as needed, and real-sounding voices speak without sounding robotic.
3. Give us some examples of how ZoomText can be applied while performing different tasks on the computer.
ZoomText lets you to zoom in on websites, email, Word documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, absolutely anything you’re doing on the computer screen, helping to make things larger and easier to see. Combined with the screen reading tools, you’ll find that you can use a computer for longer periods of time since there’s far less strain on your eyes.
ZoomText puts you on an equal playing field with your peers, allowing you to remain a productive employee and/or student. It’s not just for work and school, though – ZoomText allows you to stay in touch with those you care about. Zoom in on all those photos that your friends and family send you, compose email messages, check out their statuses on Facebook, you name it. ZoomText is a great help when you’re shopping online, balancing the checkbook, looking up recipes for dinner, reading the newspaper – the list goes on and on.
4. How easy is this software to use?
ZoomText has been designed for users of all ages and skill levels. ZoomText’s friendly user interface makes it easy to access all ZoomText features with either the mouse or keyboard. Standard menus and easy-to-use toolbars provide fast access to the most important and frequently used settings. With a precise mix of power and simplicity, ZoomText provides total independence at home, school, and in the workplace. It’s simple enough for the casual user, yet powerful enough for the corporate user.
5. What training is available to help someone learn how to use ZoomText.
We offer free 60-day trials – either by download or you can request a trial package complete with CD by mail. Technical support is always free, even if you’re still on the free trial. They can be reached Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST at 802-362-3612 option #3 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. There’s a wealth of resources including videos, free online webinars, a knowledge base and user forum on our website: www.aisquared.com/support.
Our free training webinars are offered every week – one session is dedicated to just the new features in ZoomText 10 and the other provides a general overview of ZoomText as a whole. If you can’t attend a live session, we have them recorded so you can watch them whenever it’s convenient for you:
6. What size computer monitor is suggested for use with ZoomText?
ZoomText does not require a special monitor, or even two monitors. ZoomText has a built-in feature that allows you to use two, side-by-side monitors if that setup is what you prefer to use. That said, ZoomText works just as effectively on a standard, single-monitor computer setup. It also works great on laptops.
7. Which version of ZoomText would be best for someone with macular degeneration? Is it available for PC's and Mac computers?
Our Magnifier/Reader version of ZoomText is the most popular – this version provides the user with the option to enlarge the images or text on the computer screen, as well as choose to have the text on your screen read aloud. Even if you don’t think you need the speech features at the moment, you will find that you gradually ease into using them to increase your productivity and ease the strain on your eyes.
We recently released ZoomText version 10, in which we included five key new features: the Enhanced Web Finder, ZoomText Camera, Background Reader, ZoomText Recorder, and AppReader Read from Pointer. ZoomText is a PC only software product, it does not run on Mac computers.
8. How much does it cost and where can it be purchased?
ZoomText Magnifier retails for $399 and ZoomText Magnifier/Reader retails for $599. International versions (ZoomText comes in over 20 languages) are available for $100 extra.
It can be purchased directly from Ai Squared or at Amazon:ZoomText 10 Screen Magnifier/Reader
