What is Fish Oil?

What is fish oil? Omega 3 fish oils are found in fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines..

Nordic Fish Oil

Fish oils contain what is called essential fatty acids. They are called this because without them we die - they are essential for our bodies including our brains, our eyes, our heart, our skin and our joints to name a few.

What are Essential Fatty Acids?

There are two types of EFAs:

√ Omega-6 EFAs - found in vegetable oils such as corn oil and soybean oil

√ Omega-3 EFAs - found in walnut oil, flaxseed oil, fatty fish, and marine plankton

The two critical types of omega 3 EFAs are:

docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and

eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

Both DHA and EPA are NOT found in plant food sources such as flax, walnuts or canola oil. These plant sources are instead rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

However, the metabolic conversion of ALA to DHA/EPA (combined) can be inefficient. The most direct way of providing DHA plus EPA for the body is through eating cold water fish or fish oil supplements.

EPA Fatty Acid

Eicosapentaenoic acid - try saying that - known as EPA cannot be manufactured by the body, just like DHA. Fish oil contains both EPA and DHA. EPA is associated with reduced inflammation of the joints and brain function.

DHA Fish Oil

Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) has been studied for its role in

heart,

brain and

eye health.

Although it is found in most tissues throughout the body,

the highest concentrations of DHA are in:

1) the brain,

2) the nervous system and

3) the retina of the eye.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet

The low fat diet craze of the last several years has resulted in a lot of misinformation about the importance of fat in our diet.

I was one of these misinformed people who stuck to a very low fat diet, not realizing how important essential fatty acids are to our brains, muscles, nerves and yes, our eyes.

It is important to know what fats to stay away from and what fats we should incorporate into our diet. There are fats that when eaten result in more inflammation in the body. Processed foods contain these pro-inflammatory fats. The more you can stay away from packaged foods like cookies, crackers, and chips, the more your health and eyes will benefit.

Incorporating omega 3 fatty acids into our diet is important, but so is the balance of omega 3s with omega 6s. To read more click here: omega 3 to omega 6 ratio

What is fish oil? It is a healthy oil that is necessary for a healthy body and benefits the heart, the skin, the brain and yes the eye as well.
