Wet Macular Degeneration - Clinical Trial

by Barry

Sorry to send 2 messages, but in looking at your treatment section, it doesn't include any of the new treatments either fast-tracked or the new pazopanib treatment which, in my opinion, should be approved. It's currently in phase III trials.

Shouldn't they be included? I understand the new stuff for the dry form is on a fast track to FDA approval.

I have a rather aggressive form (or so I'm told) of wet macular degeneration in both eyes and am in a clinical trial for pazopanib.

Prior to that, 2 years of injections of Avastin and Lucentis yielded little results. The pazopanib has significantly reduced the fluid leakage.

If pazopanib works as well for others as it did for me it could be the next greatest thing for this condition.

Are you promoting these kinds of drugs and trials on the site? I'm suggesting promoting these drugs more prominently on your site to give hope to people with this condition. The drugs on the horizon for the dry form are quite promising, too.

I know from my own experience that this can be devastating. When it first happened in my left eye, there was only laser treatment.

By the time the right eye was affected, Avastin/Lucentis were being used. Now the drops may be taking the place of both. That would be a real God send.

Please take these kinds of things to the front of your website so that those newly diagnosed might have hope.

Warm Regards,

Hi Barry,

Thanks so much for taking the time to share with us your experience with different treatments and now the study drug, pazopanib, for wet macular degeneration.

I gladly let others know about clinical trials that are available for macular degeneration treatment.

For others who may be interested in the the pazopanib study for wet macular degeneration here is the link:

Dose Ranging Study of Pazopanib to Treat Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration

According to the clinical trials website it is still a Phase II study. So the stated purpose is:

"... to determine the safety and efficacy of different dosage regimens of pazopanib eye drops for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration."

This means that the safety and efficacy is still being studied and there are no published results at the time of this posting. It is up to each individual as to whether or not they want to participate in a clinical trial. But thanks for bringing awareness to this study.

Kind Regards,

Leslie Degner, RN, BSN

Fenretinide and Macular Degeneration
by:

Leslie,

Can you please get some additional information about Fenretinide? Has it started the third phase of the clinical trial?

When would it be available to people with dry/wet macular degeneration if approved? Phase II showed that it is helpful for types.

Your site has very helpful information. Thank you for all of your efforts.

Fenretinide is a synthetic derivative of Vitamin A. According to a report given at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in October 2010 by researchers from the New York University School of Medicine, fenretinide nearly halved the risk of developing wet AMD in patients with dry AMD. Some slowing of the progression of dry AMD was also reported in some patients.

This study has been completed if you want to read more about it. No current studies are listed at the NIH clinical trials website.

Clinical Trials - Fenretinide
by: Anonymous

Barry, thank you for this valuable information.
Do you know if Fenretinide the medication that holds so much promise for both dry and wet macular degeneration is in the third phase of clinical trials. I have called the company ReVision Therapeutics and always get an answering machine. I left my name and phone number but have received no call. I checked clinicaltrials.gov,and I didn't see anything posted about Fenretinide in phase 3. I read that the first two phases were very successful.

Any other info you find will be very much appreciated. Good luck to you and others with the problem.

This website has also been very helpful.
