Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration

Wet age related macular degeneration is one of two types of age related macular degeneration (AMD).

Wet AMD

This retinal disease involves the dying of cells in the macula - a tiny spot in the center of the retina responsible for our detailed and central vision.

Wet AMD causes more severe vision loss compared to dry AMD. However, dry AMD is the most prevalent type, while only 10-15% of those with AMD have the wet form. The severe vision loss can be sudden or a gradual loss of vision.

Those who have dry AMD can develop wet AMD.

Wet Macular Degeneration Symptoms

Wet AMD causes the loss of our central or straight ahead vision, making it difficult to read or to recognize faces.

Often, there is a blurred or gray spot in the center of vision that looks like this:

There are other vision changes as well. One's vision is no longer as sharp and distinct as it used to be, colors are less vivid and glare can be a problem. To learn more about macular degeneration symptoms click here:

Wet Macular Degeneration Treatment Options

The goal of most wet macular degeneration treatments is to stop any further bleeding in the macula. Why is this so important? When these immature blood vessels leak, they permanently damage the photoreceptor cells.

Can wet macular degeneration be reversed with any of these treatments? Not usually. Again the goal is to stop or slow the progression of this disease.

There are traditional treatment options that include injections into the eye, photodynamic therapy, macular degeneration surgery and nutritional support.

Non-traditional options include acupuncture and microstimulation along with nutritional support.
