Large Print Checks
by Janice
(Evanston, Illinois)
I have been able to continue writing checks by buying large print checks. The size of the check is larger and will still fit in a long size envelope.
The large size of the check makes it easier to fill in the blanks and the larger print is easier to read.
Some of my utility bills I have been able to have them automatically put on a credit card so that I have less checks to write. Or I do automatic drafts which means less check writing.
Also I like to use 20/20 low vision pen. The writing is thicker and the bold black ink makes it easier to see what I am writing.
I don't need it yet, but when the time comes there are also check writing guides to help me write all the numbers, memo, dates, etc in the right space.
These aids cost just a couple of dollars and are well worth it. They make every day living a little easier and helps me to maintain my independence.

Large Print Playing Cards
by Doris
(Houston, Texas)
I live in an independent living facility - so although my friends don't have macular degeneration - none of them mind playing with large print cards either.
The cards are regular size, but the numbers on them are not only really large, but are a deep black on a nice white background. They are so much easier for me to see (and win :). When the other residents see my cards, they all ask where I got them.
Playing games is a big part of my social life. If I stop playing them, I will end up spending too much time alone. Who wants to sit and watch TV all day?
I also have a large print Scrabble game. Getting together with my friends to play cards or Scrabble is the best part of my day - helps to keep my mind active as well.

Large Print Deposit Slips
Hi there. I am writing for my grandmother who has wet macular degeneration. We see that there are low vision checks available, but have you ever heard of low vision deposit slips?
Thanks!

Large Number TV Remote
by Carol
(Houston, Texas)
One of the most useful visual aids that I use, is a large number TV remote. It's so big, you can't lose it :).
The keypad is really large and so are the numbers. The numbers are in bold, black print and have a back light, so it is easy to see day or night.

Sewing Aids for People with Macular Degeneration
by Barb
(Brookfield, WI)
My friend loves to sew, what kind of visual aids can she use, and can something be attached to a sewing machine?
REPLY
Hi Barb,
Try finding a magnifying lamp with an adjustable arm - like this one pictured here. Position the magnifier/light where she would be able to see the stitching from the machine.
If any other readers have suggestions please add your comments.
