Vitamins for Macular Degeneration

There are several formulas for vitamins for macular degeneration. Choosing an eye vitamin can be confusing. But here are some of the different eye formulas that are used by this eye vitamin company.

1. Visivite Original AREDS Vitamins

The original Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS)formulation is now considered standard of care until the results of AREDS 2 are out. Here is the press release on this study sponsored by the National Institute of Health.

"Scientists found that people at high risk of developing advanced stages of AMD, a leading cause of vision loss,

lowered their risk by about 25 percent when treated with a high-dose combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and zinc.

In the same high risk group -- which includes people with intermediate AMD, or advanced AMD in one eye but not the other eye -- the nutrients reduced the risk of vision loss caused by advanced AMD by about 19 percent.

For those study participants who had either no AMD or early AMD, the nutrients did not provide an apparent benefit. "

Visivite offers a formula that includes what was used in the AREDS. They also offer a chart comparing their formula to other vitamins for macular degeneration.

2. AREDS 2 Vitamins

The AREDS 2 study is sponsored by the National Institute of Health. It is an on-going study but closed to new participants. In other words, those that are in the study are still being followed and the results will not be out until 2012.

This is what this study is about:

"AREDS2 is a multi-center randomized trial of approximately 4,200 participants designed to assess the effects of oral supplementation of high doses of lutein and zeaxanthin and

omega-3 DHA and EPA

for the treatment of

AMD and cataract. "

Eligible participants are followed for a minimum of five years.

In anticipation of positive results from this study, Dr. Krawitz has developed a AREDS 2 Formula of macular degeneration vitamins called VisiVite Premier Ocular Formula Number 2.

He recommends this formula for patients with:

1) Progressive macular degeneration with vision loss in one or both eyes

2) Presence in the retina of large drusen, pigmentation or geographic atrophy

FloraGlo

2) It is a quality ingredient included in many lutein capsules for its stability and potency

3) Is used in many of the macular degeneration clinical trials

4) Twice as bioavailable as lutein from spinach or lutein-fortified yellow carrots

5) Safe - it has been used since the mid-1990's with no reported safety complaints. To learn more about FloraGlo click here: FloraGlo
