If a person is purchasing a new TV - there is plasma or LCD. It may be best to bring the person with AMD to the store to see if one technology is clearer and easier to see than the other.

TV Screen Magnifier
by Judy
(United States)
My mother has wet macular degeneration with central vision loss.
Do you know of any aid she could use so she could see tv better? She has a 27 inch tv and has to sit right in front of the tv to see it.
She also has web tv and wants very badly to be able to see the keyboard and the tv screen so she can use her web tv again.
Do you have any suggestions for aids she could use that would help her? Thanks, Judy

TV Magnifier

Regarding TV magnifiers. I know a group of elders who have macular degeneration and are asking me to find ways that they can enjoy TV again.
Are these magnifiers actually any good. I wouldn't want an elder person to lose money and hope. So you know of somewhere in Oregon to purchase these?
Thank you.

Hi Judith,
Amazon offers a TV Screen Magnifier for 15" to 25" diagonal TV.
There are reviews here, one of which has macular degeneration.

TV Screen for Dry AMD
by Veryl
(Cedar Rapids, Iowa)
What type of TV screen is the easiest for dry macular degeneration eyes to view?
REPLY
Dear Veryl,
It depends on what vision enhancements are needed. Such as magnification, contrast adjustment and reduced glare.
I would suggest that you go to a store that sells the different types and sizes of TV and actually watch them and pay attention to the clarity.
If any other readers have comments or suggestions for Veryl please add them as well.
Kind Regards,

Is the TV screen magnifier returnable if it doesn't help my dad?
Reply
That's the right question to ask Christine. Lots of times it's hard to know how well a screen magnifier will work until one tries it.
The screen magnifiers on this site are available from Amazon partners - such as Independent Living Aids. When you go to the screen on TV magnifiers you will see a link that says "Return Policy."
Click on that link and you will get an explanation for that company. Most items are returnable if they are returned in a certain time frame, as-new, in resalable condition and in their original box with all instructions and warranties.
Usually the customer has to pay shipping fees to return it and some will charge a restocking fee.
