Swing Arm Desk Lamp

A swing arm desk lamp is a powerful visual aid for those with macular degeneration.

Low Vision Lighting

One of the early smptoms of macular degeneration is the need for more light - that's because there are less functioning photoreceptor cells. More lights are needed around the house and lights that can be positioned and directed are both needed.

At one of our visits to see my father-in-law who has wet macular degeneration I was surprised to see that there were no swing arm or goose neck lamps. Just regular table lamps or overhead lighting were his sources of light.

One of your most important vision aids is correct lighting and good lighting. To perform tasks like going through the mail, reading, or performing a hobby requires a lamp that has an adjustable arm. The light needs to be brought close and directed right near the reading material or hobby.

With better lighting there is less need for magnification. There are several styles of swing arm desk lamps - desk lamps that can be used in the office or clamp on lights for the garage, work bench or hobby table. Different light sources such as fluorescent, incandescent or halogen are another consideration.

The Adjustable Desk Lamp with the best reviews was for this clamp on light. Once adjusted the lamp stays in position and the dual bulbs (incandescent and fluorcescent) provides a really high quality of light.

Halogen Desk Lamp

A halogen desk lamp provides the brightest light for close up work. Often times with better or correct lighting, the need for magnification is much less.

Although a halogen bulb does give off heat and can get hot, many people with macular degeneration prefer the bright light of a halogen bulb. You may have to experiment to find the type of light that works best for you.

Amazon offers a gooseneck halogen desk lamp that provides a really bright light and a sturdy base:

Swing Arm Magnifying Lamp

If you are still having trouble seeing with better lighting and correct positioning of the desk lamp, then consider a swing arm magnifying lamp - a lamp that provides light and magnification.

The mounting clamp on this light is very sturdy while the swing arm provides many different adjustable positions to make it possible to do detailed work with less eye strain. The magnification is 3X.

The first lamp offered fluorescent light, the second one a halogen light while this one has 60 bright LED lights. Click here to go to Amazon: Magnifying Desk Lamp
