Sunglasses and Macular Degeneration

How can we be sure that sunglasses offer the protection we need? Is there a registered and protected mark?

Need they be expensive?

A hat is a hat, but are these sunglasses really effective? How effective? Are they rated? Do they vary? Does Consumers reports test them?

REPLY

The most important feature is that sunglasses provide 100% UV protection. The label will say either "UV400" or "100% UVA and UVB Protection."

More expensive sunglasses do not mean more protection, but rather better optical quality of the lense or more expensive frames. Optical quality determines how sharp your vision will be. The higher the quality the less distortion.

One of the most common symptoms of macular degeneration is a loss of sharp, detailed vision.

Which means it is all the more important that one's sunglasses don't contribute to more blurriness or loss of sharp, clear vision.

Colour of Sunglass Lens for AMD

by Evan
(Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

Would like to purchase my mother a pair of sunglasses to help protect her eyes. She currently has AMD, wet in one eye and dry in the other.

Can you advise the best lens colour that I should request when getting her sunglasses.

Maui Jim's is the brand I am considering but not sure what the best lens colour to optimize her vision, depth of field, contrast, ease of focus etc.

Thanks for your help, your site is a god-send.

With love and gratitude, Evan from Toronto Canada

Thanks Evan for your kind comments. Glasses that are tinted orange or amber block blue light.

Other colored tinted lenses lets part of the blue spectrum through.

Their are a couple of advantages wearing sunglasses with a blue light lens.

1. Block Blue Light

2. Reduce Glare

3. Do Not Darken One's Vision Like Most Sunglasses

You can purchase these glasses from your local optician or from FirstStreet.com

Eagle Eyes Extreme Sunglasses

Hi Evan,

Sunglasses that offer protection from blue light, like the Noir sunglasses are beneficial. Glasses that are tinted orange or amber block blue light. Other colored tinted lenses lets part of the blue spectrum through. These types of glasses are called Blue Blockers
