Sony Electronic Book Reader

The Sony Electronic Book Reader can be used as a low vision technology for those with macular degeneration.

Electronic book readers offer font enlargement and zoom features.

Sony Ebook Reader

You may be new to the concept of a portable e-book reader. But depending on your magnification needs, they just may replace your large print books and magnifying glasses.

Some of the features to consider are:

√ Higher contrast ratio for easy reading even in bright sunshine.

√ Crisp and clear text, images, and graphics.

√ Font Magnifier - with three zoom levels

√ Portable - can carry a wide variety of reading material like books and documents.

√ Lots of storage - able to store up to 160 typical eBooks, with expansion slots for Memory Stick Duo media or SD memory cards make the device's library potential practically limitless.

√ Able to transfer documents, images and other files to the Reader using a USB

√ Easy to transfer ebooks and files from your computer and the Sony eBook store - called Sony CONNECT. You do need a computer for the Sony ebook reader.

There are 3 styles to choose from of the Sony electronic book reader.

Sony Reader PRS 505

This reader has a 6" screen and it is slightly larger than a paper back book. It boasts an easy to read and see e-ink.

Unlike other LCD screens which are difficult to see and read, especially in bright light - these e-reader screens are much like reading from a book - and usually with even better contrast.

You can turn the 505 to landscape mode to take advantage of a wider screen.

This edition only offers 3 different sizes for font magnification - probably not enough for most people with macular degeneration.

Cost is around $399.

Sony PRS 600 Touch Edition

This offers a 6" touch screen and again only the 3 font magnification. There is a zoom in and out feature.

Cost $290

Many reviews for the touch screen complained about it having more glare and less readability or clarity than the 500 model. However, the touch screen is much easier to use.

One user recommends the Sony PRS-600BC ClearTouch Anti-Glare Screen Protector which reduces glare considerably.

Sony PRS 900

The Sony PRS 900 compares to the Kindle DX with a larger screen (still not as big as the Kindle DX). It features a 7" diagonal screen.

Also it is the only Sony Electronic Book Reader with free 3G wireless through AT&T to access the Sony eBookstore without the need of a computer.

This one allows you to increase the grayscale level, from 8 to 16. Cost is $400.

PRS 300 Pocket Edition

A pocket Sony Reader has just come out. The screen is smaller at 5". For most people with macular degeneration this screen will be too small.

The screen features a paper-like display so it reads like a hard copy. In addition to the natural reading surface, this Sony book reader also has adjustable font sizes, quick page turning, and a high contrast ratio, which makes reading possible even in direct sunlight.

Navigation is done by side buttons on the right and left-hand side page advance buttons.
