Smoking and Living in the Valley of the Sun Damaged My Eyes

I was about 60 when I quit smoking one and a half packs a day for 43 years. My ophthamoligist said if I didn't quit at once I would lose my vision.

The fact that I never protected my eyes with sun glasses didn't help either. A year later I developed cataracts and had surgery to remove them.

The surgery resulted in a detached retina and that surgery resulted in double vision. Soon after I was diagnosed with glaucoma and while being treated for that I developed macular degeneration.

I started with the dry variety, but in no time it turned to wet. Thanks to my retinologist I still have enough vision at age 81 to drive a little
and watch television.

If I had known what smoking would do to my eyes I would never have lit the first one.
