Your Retinal Pigment Epithelium

Your retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is critical for macular health.

Macular degeneration is not only the death of rod and cone cells but also the degeneration of the tissue that lies underneath the retina.

Those layers are:

1. Rods and Cones - the photoreceptor cells

2. Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE)

3. Bruch's Membrane

4. Choroid - a layer of blood vessels that brings nutrients to the macula

Functions of the RPE

√ Delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cone and rod cells from the choroid

√ Carries away waste from the rod and cone cells in the macula to the choroid

If this delivery system becomes disabled and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the rod and cone cells is impaired, the result is a degeneration or dying of these cells.
