Retina Doctor - Georgia
by Marcia
(Georgia)
My granny has had glaucoma for years. She had cataract surgery a few years ago with lenses put in.
Now she has macular degeneration. She has done the drops for the glaucoma. Shots in one eye but had to stop because it made the pressure go up to around 26.
In the past two months she has had dramatic vision loss. One eye has wet AMD and the other is dry.
We live in Georgia and I wanted to know if there was any doctors close by that can help get her vision back.

Hi Marcia,
To find a retina specialist you can perform your own search on the web. The two organizations that offer this information are the American Academy of Retina Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Macular Degeneration Specialist - Italy
by Arianna
(Turin, Italy)
My mother, 81 years old, suffers from macular degeneration.
It's possible to know in Italy some oculist specialist in this disease? She lives in Turin. Thank you!
Hello Arianna,
I went to the clinical trials website (www.clinicaltrials.gov) and looked for macular degeneration clinical trials in Italy. Each study has a principle investigator who is usually a retina specialist. There is a study in Treviso for wet macular degeneration. The principle investigator is Stefano Piermarocchi, M.D. at the University of Padova.
Here is the contact information for the study:
Photodynamic Therapy Combined With Bevacizumab vs Bevacizumab Alone for Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Also contact Per Vedere Fatti Vedere onlus
It is a not for profit Italian organisation, funded by the Italian Ophthalmologists Society, with the mission of offering to ADM and/or glaucoma patients information, advice, support and updates on the ongoing research on diagnosis and treatments worldwide.
It also undertakes campaigning activities for pressing Italian Institutions to recognise and respectpatients' rights. Click here to go to that website:

Macular Degeneration Specialist
by Elizabeth
(Bensalem, PA)
I am desperately searching for a specialist in macular degeneration who can help me.
Do you know of someone in the Philadelphia area who is known for his specialization in this field of eye disease? My current doctor is trained in various areas of eye problems but is not very knowledgeable about macular degeneration.
I have be diagnosed with the early stages of dry macular degeneration.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Elizabeth,
If you have been diagnosed with macular degeneration it is important to see a retina doctor - he is an M.D. who specializes in diseases of the retina, including macular degeneration, maculopathy, and macular edema.
A retina specialist is an ophthalmologist who has done an extra fellowship training in retina diseases for one or two years after completing his residency in ophthalmology.
Call your university hospital or one of your larger, well known hospitals and ask for their physician referral service.
Many hospitals have this, including the one I work for. Ask them for a referral for a retina specialist. They can give you their names and their credentials such as board certification, where they had their fellowship and how many years they have been practicing.

Retina Doctor for Macular Degeneration
by Rhonda
(PA)
I went to a dr. of Optometric and she said she would monitor the intermediate dry macular degeneration and if there are any changes she would immediately send me to a retinal specialist. Is this ok? Would it be better to go to the retinal specialist now.
REPLY
Hi Rhonda,
This is a tough question, but since you asked, you must be worried. Why not get checked out by obtaining a second opinion from a retinal specialist? That way, both you and your optometrist will be validated!

Retina Specialist
by Susan
(United States)
Shouldn't a patient that has been diagnosed with Macular Degeneration be seeing an eye specialist?
My mom was diagnosed at least 4-5 years ago with Macular Degeneration. She has had cataracts removed within the last year.....because of seeing crooked lines in one eye.....now she is seeing spots in both eyes in the morning and is continuing to see just her regular eye doctor.
He is having her wait 2-3 weeks before a full eye exam.
I am very concerned.
What are your thoughts?
REPLY
Hi Susan,
I know about your experience. My father-in-law whose dry AMD has turned to wet has never been referred to a retina specialist by his eye doctor.
The answer is yes, it is best to have your mom be checked by a macular degeneration specialist.
A retina specialist is an ophthalmologist who has done an extra fellowship training in retina diseases for one or two years after completing his residency in ophthalmology.
