Page Magnifiers
by Beverly
(United States)
Hi Leslie,
I have a question for you. My mother has macular degeneration. She's 93 and her lack of vision on top of other issues has taken her independence.
Is there a good page magnifier I could buy for her?
She can see some words on her own, but very limited vision, and she used to love reading magazines.
She has a small magnifier but finds it frustrating. I don't know what magnification would work for her.
Thank you.
Beverly

Hi Beverly,
If your mom is using a hand held magnifier for reading books that becomes tedious. A hand held magnifier is good for "spot" reading like a label on a can, a prescription bottle or a bill.
Your mom will find that a hands free magnifier, like a floor lamp magnifier, would be better suited for reading.
Lighting plays an important role in reading as well. The better the lighting the less magnification that is needed.
Ideally, a lighted full page magnifier works best for reading books and magazines such as this one.

Page Magnifiers
by Chetna
Hello Leslie,
I love your website and read every e-mail I get from you. My Mom has been recently diagnosed with AMD and I think it has devastated me more than her because she does not know all the long term symptoms of it.
In some ways it is good because we don't want her to stop living her life.
Anyways, where can we buy this full page magnifier?
I was searching for this particular one but could not find it, would you mind helping me with it?
Thanks for all the wonderful info you provide.

Full Page Magnifier
by Janet
(River Falls, WI)
I have learned that I can read well sitting at my desk with a full page magnifier that has little legs and stands over the book I am reading.
Of course I also have a gooseneck lamp that I can move and adjust so that I can see the words better. I found that with better light, I need less magnification, which makes it easier to read and to see the full page.

Hi Godwin,
A hand held magnifier gets tedious for any type of lengthy reading.
A hands free magnifier, like a floor lamp magnifier, would be better suited for reading.
I have not been able to find a quality full page desk magnifier. But I have found this floor lamp magnifier that can be placed next to your desk and then adjust or move it for your best viewing.

Swing Arm Magnifier Lamp
by Randy
(Baldwin, WI)
Reading in my favorite chair has become easier since I started using a swing arm magnifier lamp. I adjust the lamp so that the light shines directly on the page I am reading. Try this before using a stronger magnifier.

Reading in bed
by Sheri
(Truckee, CA)
I like to read in bed as it helps me go to sleep. What is available for me to do this?
REPLY
Hi Sheri,
I love to read in bed as well. This hands free lighted magnifier that is worn around the neck may work for you if the magnification is sufficient. The larger the magnifier, the smaller the power - this one magnifies 2.5x. Click on this link to MaxiAids to see what you think:
