My Problem with Macular Degeneration Vitamins

I was diagnosed with dry macular degeneration in one eye two months ago. The doctor told me to take Centrum Vision and come back in six months.

I tried these vitamins for about three weeks but they made me feel so sick and exhausted I could hardly function, so I tried two other brands of eye vitamins and they did the same thing. I can't believe that something that makes me feel this sick can be helping me. I'm scared not to take them because I don't want to go blind. Would anyone have any suggestions for me?

Eye Vitamins
by: Anonymous

I'm here because I was searching online to see if anyone else gets sick to the stomach and vomits when takes eye vitamins for Macular degeneration. I have tried Perservision and Ocuvite and had the same experience. I found a brand online called Visisheild which I'm able to keep down.

I do get terrible constipation at times but I'm not sure if it's from the vitamins. I do not want to go blind, but I'm sick of the way I was feeling on the Perservision and Ocuvite.

Totally agree with these comments I have tried several times with several different (costly)eye vitamins. After taking 2 days they cause upset stomach, constipation and my system is out of whack for a week.

Awful AREDS2 and bad blood work
by: Anonymous

I have been taking these AREDS2 4 years ago and my stomach slowly stated acting up so the doctor put me on omeprazole. So I used that combo until my stomach hurt so bad the doc sent me in for a scope and they said inflammation was going but it got way worse - had no idea it was AREDS2 till I forgot to take them for a whole day and by the next morning my stomach felt so much better. In the mean time my iron levels fell to the point of almost a transfusion but they put me on iron tables and things got a bit better. Still had stomach issues and was very tired all the time, joints hurt ,and I didn't want to go anywhere. Now that I been off the AREDS2 for a week I feel a lot better and need to have my blood checked again in 2 weeks.

Vitamin E in Preservision
by: Anonymous

Preservision also made me horribly nauseous. Finally figured out in appears to be the relatively high dose of vitamin E. Switched to Ocuvite Blue Light (lutein and zeaxanthin only) and no problems.

MacuHealth supplement
by: Eve

Not sure what ingredients in this specific brand of eyes supplement, but it gives me really bad diarrhea every time i take them. I know i have a sensitive stomach but still! I stopped for 1 week and my stomach was better. I took it again this morning and i was sick in my stomach again within one hour. I will definitely stop this supplement even if it supposed to help with mascular degeneration unfortunately.

I become very ill from Lutein so I tried AREDS2. Same problems. Upset stomach, aches. Fatigue. Stop taking it and a few days, better. Trying to figure what I can do since I have macular degeneration and fear blindness. Can’t tolerate the illness from these supplements.

REACTIONS TO SUPPLEMENTS
by: Jim

It is not unusual to have reactions to these AMD supplements. They give me terrible stomach problems including gas, pain, and diarrhea. I have a problem with many vitamin supplements. The makers use fillers and absorption compounds to make the pills.

Macular vitamin supplement

I have tried taking Pot of Gold Macular supplement but had to stop after 4 days as I was so sick in the stomach. I took them always with a large meal. What a waste of money. Now I am going to see a Dietician for a meal plan incorporating all the recommended foods.

AREDS made me feel sick and tired
by: DebraSTL

AREDS makes me sick and tired also. These vitamins gave me a funny taste in my mouth and affected my sense of smell. I kept smelling a peanut smell. My urine smells of it also. Nausea, tiredness, diarrhea. Of course I took with food. Didn't help. Way too much zinc, just way too much everything.I stopped taking them. I felt better in one day. I'll figure something else out. I have dry macular degeneration.

AREDS ARE SICKENING
by: Jim

I hurried out and bought some AREDS 2 when my eye doc said you are developing Macular Degeneration. Within less than 2 days I was so sick to my stomach and getting diarrhea I had to quit the supplement.

I tried just AREDS and it was the same thing. I have had problems with vitamin supplements due, I believe, in part to the fillers and absorption components in the pills/tablets.

I suspect its the same for other patients who can't tolerate the supplements and doctors and pharmacologists who don't understand these patients.

I have the same problem
by: V

I took my areds vitamins and got so nauseous and exhausted I knew something was up. I go to a holistic practitioner and I had her test me with them. She said my body doesn't like something that's in that list.

She had lutein at her office and tested me with that and I was fine. So something on that list is disagreeing with you. One of the vitamins was made from marigold and she thinks that might be the culprit. it's not in your head people just don't understand that our bodies reject things that we are sensitive to. I would find a good holistic practitioner in your area and make sure you are taking things at your body wants to have.

Every time I take preservision areds 2 I get nauseous. Does not matter if I take it with a meal
or by itself. I take it on the advice of my eye doctor because of the macular degeneration diagnosis.

I also had the same experience with taking MacuHealth for eyes. I have been taking them for three weeks and have been so sick and extremely exhausted. I have had diarrhea, nausea, wheezing and exhaustion.

I called the company and found the ingredients that it is derived from is Marigolds which I am allergic to plus it gelatin from beef, which I am also allergic too. I am a vegetarian and would have liked to know beef gelatin was used even if I wasn't allergic to it.. Not happy,

Vitamins Make Me Sick
by: Anonymous

I can't take any of the vitamins that were suggested to me. They make me very sick to my stomach and I feel really bad. I've tried taking them with food and that didn't help either. I take what vitamins I can, like fish oil, certain vitamin Cs, magnesium taurate and IP6 with inositol. I'm going to try the saffron next, hoping so badly that I can take it. I don't know why some vitamins make me sick and others don't. I have tried a lot of different brands as well. I have drug sensitivities too so I am very limited on the drugs that I can take. My doctor told me this is more common than most people realize.

Thank you for your help
by: Anonymous

I am now taking the I-Caps Vitamins with meals and doing OK. I have also added the Lutein and Zeaxanthin as I've read a lot of good things about them and I am also taking saffron tablets, 15mg a day but planing to go up to 20 mg.

The saffron is really helping my depression as well. I guess I'm throwing everything I can at this disease and I'm feeling better about it. I had been taking all the other vitamins with my meals, but they still made me feel exhausted and sick to my stomach. Hopefully I'm on the right track now.

My Mom is 90 and takes the AREDS vitamins which are strong. She felt sick too, nausea et. You have to take them with food.

I also get sick to my stomach when I take my regular Centrum vitamin without food. When she took the vitamins with food she was fine. See your doctor to find out if anything else is wrong. All the best, Deb

Maybe You Should Try Zeaxanthin & Lutein
by: Anonymous

My Mother has macular degeneration and she used to take the Preservision vitamins, but then she was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

She had 3/4 of her stomach removed and had a very difficult time with food and supplements after that, so now instead of the eye vitamins she takes a combination pill of Zeaxanthin and Lutein for her eyes (which she buys from Costco).

At her last checkup, the opthalmologist said her macular degeneration is stable and he said that taking the Lutein & Zeaxanthin could be helping. I wish you good luck.

Just wondering if you have taken these vitamins with a meal or any food? My eye vitamins bother me if I don't do that - I've been taking the

I-Caps for many years as my doctor ordered.

Hope you find some that you can take without side effects.
