Magnifying Lamps
| Magnifying lamps provide the most helpful visual aids for macular degeneration - magnification and light. | While visiting my in-laws I noticed that they had many table lamps but no swing arm desk lamp or swing arm floor lamp. More direct lighting is needed for those with macular degeneration. In fact one of the first signs of macular degeneration is the need for more light. Being able to adjust the lamp or direct the light so that the light hits your book, newspaper or hobby is the most important feature of this vision aid.
The other benefit of magnifying lamps is that they are also a hands free magnifier. No need to try to hold a magnifier under a light while trying to manage a book, write a bill or sew on a button.
As your macular degeneration progresses you will need more light and more magnification. You will find reading and hobbies enjoyable again once you find the right lamp magnifier.
Magnifying floor lamps come in different styles and with different lighting - LED lighting, halogen or fluorescent lighting. Flexible arms to adjust to various positions, wheels for portability and an adjustable base are some of the common features in these lamps. To see a selection click here:

A magnifying desk lamp is great to have at the desk where you go through your mail, write letters, or balance your check book. Determine what power magnification you need before you make your selection. Choose a swing arm or adjustable desk lamp for better lighting and focus. To see some desktop magnifiers click here:

Ott lighting provides a light that has less glare but better contrast than regular lighting. This technology provides light that reduces eye strain, simulates day light, has low heat and reduces glare. To learn more about this lighting click here:
