Maculopathy

Maculopathy is a general term for any disease of the macula.

The macula is a small spot located in the center of the retina and is responsible for our sharp and detailed vision. Usually it results in a progressive loss or distortion of one's central vision.

There are several forms of this retinal disease.

Diabetic

In this type, fluid leaks out of the blood vessels into the retina. If fluid builds up under the macula, the patient will develop macular edema and will experience distortion of their vision.

Age-Related

This is the same as Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). It is a progressive loss of vision due to changes in the macula that is associated with aging. There are two forms dry macular degeneration and wet macular degeneration. Click here to read more: Age Related Macular Degeneration

Cellophane

This form is associated with a very fine membrane that forms over the macula, distorting one's vision.

Ocular Histoplasmosis Syndrome

This syndrome is the result of a fungal disease following a systemic infection. The organism travels to the choroidal tissues of the retina. This fungal infection is usually picked up from contaminated molds found in the soil or from yeasts found in animals. The initial symptoms are fever, chills, and fatigue.

Bull's Eye

This actually is a description of the appearance of the macula, the center of the retina. It is not a diagnosis. The macula has these circular bands of different shades of pink and orange.

It is seen in these conditions:

Progressive Cone Dystrophy

Rod-Cone Dystrophy

Benign Concentric Dystrophy

Stargardt's Disease

Batten's Disease

Clinical Trial

This study is being done in Sweden.

Prophylactic Laser Treatment

Purpose is to study the effect of mild laser treatment on the incidence of exudative complications in soft drusen maculopathy. We hypothesise that mild laser treatment causing a proliferation of the retinal pigment epithelium and enhancing the capacity of clearing drusen material from Bruch's membrane.

Inclusion Criteria:

1. > 55 years of age,

2. Soft drusen
