Hi Dinish,
Since your brother is only 29 years old he probably has some form of macular dystrophy rather than age related macular degeneration.

Macular Degeneration at Thirty
I have just been diagnosed with dry macular degeneration and am 30. I've read that for age related degeneration it is 5-10 years before it affects your life style.
Is this the same for younger people? Mine is genetic as other family members have it. I know it will progress differently in everyone but I'd just like some idea. Thanks.

Hi,
There are many different retinal conditions that fall under the umbrella of macular degeneration. Age related macular degeneration typically affects older adults while young people usually have a form of macular dystrophy.
Some of the common types of macular dystrophy or juvenile macular degeneration are Best disease and Stargardts. Has your eye doctor given you a more specific diagnosis?

Juvenile Macular Degeneration
by Utkarsh
( India)
I am in India. Doctors said there is no cure for macular degeneration. I am just 18 years old.
Doctor did say to improve diet but stressed also regular check ups. So kind of doctors were no use. The internet tells me to improve diet.
I can start now. No time is late. But what should a diet be??
My life has just started... :-(
Tell me can this happen in young people. Can it be cured? Is it the food I eat that affects me?
REPLY
Dear Utkarsh,
Thanks for your questions. Since you are 18 you have a form of juvenile macular degeneration rather than age related macular degeneration. What makes the juvenile form of macular degeneration different is that genes and heredity are more responsible than diet is.

Macular Dystrophy - Hereditary Macular Degeneration
by Prapti Gupta
(Mumbai Maharashtra India)
Good Evening
My question is: Is there any scope for improvement in a patient suffering from HMD and any treatment for the same?
Hello Praptie,
Hereditary Macular Degneration affects a younger population than age related macular degeneration.
You may be referring to a type of macular dystrophy.
Macular dystrophy is a genetic form of macular degeneration that develops in childhood, teenage or young adult years.
It is usually inherited and causes progressive loss of vision that distorts or blurs what we see straight ahead.

Loss of Central Vision
by Omar
(Morocco)
I am 35 years old. I suffer from a strange disease in my right eye since my chilhood.
I have something in my near center of my vision.
Is this a macular degeneration or scotomas or what?
I have visited many ophthalmologists but no results about what is the cause of this problem.
I have a difficult time to read. It is impossible to read and to see farsight wigt a clear vision.
My eye is losing 50 percent of its ability to see properly.
I hope to answer on my question as soon as possible and thanks so much.

Hi Omar,
I am sorry to hear about your loss of vision and your difficulty reading. It is not possible to make a guess at what your diagnosis might be. There are many different diseases and conditions that affect the macula - the center of the retina.
The loss of central vision is one of the symptoms of macular degeneration. There are many different types of macular degeneration. The fact that you are 35 years old would mean that you wouldn't have age related macular degeneration, but possibly some other type of macular disease.
