Macular Degeneration Worsening on Plavix (Clopidogrel)

I had 2 cardiac stents inserted, and put on Plavix to protect the stents for at least one year.

I have noted some side effects listed as "vision loss" and did note worsening of macular degeneration at that time.

Has this been noted with others with dry macular degeneration? Elva

Hello Elva,

This a something very common that I have observed in treating patients with macular degeneration.

The retina in patients with macular degeneration is very sensitive to hypoxia (lowering of oxygen) and toxins. Remember an aging retina is just not as tough to deal with these insults.

During your surgery you were exposed to the toxic effects of the anesthesia and a decrease in oxygenation to your eye. Both of these events will adversely effect your vision.

In addition Plavex can cause blurred vision, mental confusion and retinal bleeding.

I would suggest exploring an alternative approach to your problems.

Blood Thinners and Macular Degeneration
by: Anonymous

Sadly, I am reading these comments and realize that this is what happened to my mother. She's had MD (dry form) for 35 yrs. and she was pretty stabilized for a long time until she had a pace maker installed and put on Coumadin.

A week later, the whole left side of her face hemorraghed including her left eye. She lost the vision in her left eye shortly after that, and the vision in her right eye went into the last stage of MD.

I am upset that doctors don't put two and two together when they try blood thinners on people with macular degeneration. My mother now takes an aspirin a day as a blood thinner and refuses to take anything stronger even though her doctors try to push blood thinners on her. Aspirin has it's problems too I know, but it's the lesser of the evils. Stroke is a strong possibility I know without a blood thinner.

My 87 year old Mother received an new Aortic heart valve sewn inside a stent 2 months ago, this is a relatively new procedure (no open heart surgery).

She had stable dry type macular degeneration for years that has now turned to the wet type. She also is taking Plavix to prevent clotting and is scheduled to take it for 4 more months.

Her vision has really gotten bad quickly and I'm seriously considering taking her off Plavix. what to do?

Macular Degeneration Worsening

Dear Elva,

My 89 yr old father said that his wet macular degeneration worsened when he was given Heparin injections and low dose Aspirin. I think that Plavix (the medicine you are taking) and Heparin are both used to prevent blood clots.

Plavix and Macular Degeneration
by: ELVA

Thank you. It does help to know others also suffer worsening of their macular degeneration, or vision problems, with Plavix.

I had 2 stents inserted during the angiogram, NO anesthesia, as this is not given generally during an angiogram. I noted deterioration in my vision after starting Plavix (which was overloaded at surgery for the protection to the stents).

Sadly the deterioration is continuing to progress quickly.

I was on Warfarin for 7 years with no macular degeneration problem.
Plavix is to protect stents from occluding as they were doing previously, and the doctors tell me now that I will be on Plavix for the rest of my life -sadly for my AMD.

I am most interested in others who have this Plavix problem, as the doctors really are not aware of this AMD progression, thus I wish to inform the cardiologists.

Thank you for your reply of great interest to me.
