Macular Degeneration Treatment - Saffron
by Jacqueline
Dear Leslie
Thank you so much for all the necessary work you do to produce the news letter. I find it very informative and helpful. I would like to ask if you know anything about the Tacoma Clinic in Washington and their approach to macular degeneration.
Dr. Jonathan Wright uses Betaine Hydrochloride intravenously and apparently is getting very good results. I wonder if you know anything about this treatment. Also I heard about a study with saffron. There is also a Lutein spray sold in England called Full Focus, which you spray under your tongue and apparently it goes directly to the eyes. It is not available in Canada or the US and the companies selling this product do not ship here either. If you know anything about any of the previous inquiries, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you again for all your good work.
Appreciatively yours,
Jacqueline

Hi Jacqueline,
Thanks for your e-mail. The only treatment that I am aware of in your e-mail is a clinical trial that is being done in Rome, Italy using saffron.
Here is a link for more info on this study:

Saffron Supplements for Macular Degeneration
by Ronnie
(NJ)
Hello Leslie,
I know there has been a clinical trial conducted in Europe regarding the effect of saffron supplements on vision for people with macular degeneration, however, I cannot find any updated information on this.
I asked my Mother's retina doctor and her ophthalmalogist about using saffron for AMD and neither had heard anything about it, and her ophthalmologist told me not to believe what I read on the Internet.
I would like to know if I should encourage my Mother, who has dry macular degeneration in both eyes, to take Saffron supplements as well as taking them myself to prevent AMD.
Can you tell me your feelings on this issue?
Thank you!

Hi Ronnie,
The study you are referring to, Effect of Saffron Supplementation on Macular Cone-mediated Function in Age-related Macular Degeneration is being conducted in Rome, Italy.
The study is recruiting participants 55 years old and older with a diagnosis of early, non exudative macular degeneration (which means dry macular degeneration).
The study is expected to be completed in December of 2011 which means there won't be any published study results for several months after that. That is why you haven't been able to find anything on it just yet. So it is too early to say one way or another.
Sounds like you are being proactive for your mom and yourself. I encourage you to continue reading and learning - whether it is on the internet (consider the source) or macular degeneration resource books.
My husband is in your situation - his father has wet AMD. Become familiar with what's call an anti-inflammatory diet and what I call a macular degeneration diet.
Kind Regards,
Leslie Degner, RN, BSN

Saffron for improving eyesight for AMD patients
by Ruthie
(New Jersey)
Hello Leslie,
My 81-year old Mother has dry AMD in one eye and wet in the other (for which she's getting Lucentis injections...she's had 2 so far).
She takes Preservation and Lutein with Zeaxanthin. I recently read about studies done that showed saffron to be effective in restoring some eyesight to people with AMD.
Have you heard about this and, if so, do you have more information? I would like to have my Mother take saffron supplements if they are available.
Thank you for your assistance.
Ruthie B.

Hi Ruthie,
Actually, there is a clinical trial going on in Italy right now called:
Effect of Saffron Supplementation on Macular Cone-mediated Function in Age-related Macular Degeneration (safAMD)
The active group will be taking Saffron oral supplements of 20 mg/day for three months. It is a Phase I clinical trial - which means it is just starting the invesitgative process. However there are some scientific publications written about saffron supplementation. If you care to read these articles click on the link to the study and then page down to the bottom and you will find 3 articles on saffron and AMD.
