Hi Melany,
There is only one study in Canada for someone under the age of 50 and it is a clinical trial for someone who has wet macular degeneration - not dry AMD.
I'm sorry that there aren't more studies available to you at this time.

Dry Macular Degeneration - Toronto

I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and have recently read about research going on at University of Toronto on AMD.
Do you know if it is possible to be part of a clinical trial in Toronto? I have recently been diagnosed with early dry macular degeneration and would welcome participating in a clinical trial. I am now 70 years old. Thanks.

Dry/ Wet Macular Degeneration - Alberta, Canada
by Grace
(Cochrane, Alberta, Canada)
This started as wet now in the past year turned to dry for a 85 year old female - other wise very healthy. Where is the nearest location for stem cell treatment. Also what trials are available for my age group in Canada?
REPLY
Hi Grace,
I think you mean that your age related macular degeneration has progressed from dry to wet AMD.
To learn more about what is happening with stem cells and AMD go to this page: Macular Degeneration and Stem Cells
Currently there are no clinical trials for AMD in Alberta. There is one in Quebec and one in Toronto for wet AMD.
Kind Regards,
Leslie Degner, RN, BSN

Dry Macular Degeneration - Toronto, Canada

(Toronto, Canada)
I am writing for my dad who is 80 years old. He was first diagnosed at age 47. Up to now he actually still drove but couldn't pass his driving test ( which he had to do around his 80th birthday) so he doesn't have a drivers license anymore.
I believe he has lost 40% of his eyesight on a slow progression path. He lives in Toronto Canada. Would he qualify for this trial? He has dry macular degeneration in both eyes.

Wet Macular Degeneration - Saskatchewan, Canada
by Lynda
(Biggar, Saskatchewan, Canada)
My daughter is 32 years old and developed wet macular degeneration on both eyes about a year and half ago.
She no longer can see out of her right eye.
Last year her left eye developed this again and with injections it cleared up, but now 2 weeks ago it came back.
She has had an injection a week and half ago but her vision hasn't changed.
The doctors here said it may take a bit longer as she is scheduled to have another injection Sept 29 and another November 5th.
She cannot work, drive or read right now. My daughter and her husband are raising two small children and this is a very difficult time.
We are looking for other answers and procedures before she looses all her sight. Can you help?
REPLY
Dear Linda,
Thanks for your e-mail. It is surely a struggle for your daughter and her family.
At this time there are only two studies for wet macular degeneration in Canada. The requirement to be a participant is age 50 or older.
Have you contacted the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB)? They offer many services locally to those with vision problems like macular degeneration.
They have a webstore or you can ask for a free catalogue to order magnifying lamps or other visual aids. They also provide some great classes and support at their offices.
Call the Client Services team toll-free at 1-800-563-2642. This line is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. EST.
Kind Regards,
