Macular Degeneration and Stem Cells

Can a 94 year old woman with sinus problems, pacemaker and on Cumadin be a candidate for stem cell therapy?
REPLY
Hi Shirley,
Your inquiry is probably in response to this week's announcement by Advanced Cell Technology.
The United States FDA approved their application to treat dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells derived from human embryonic stem cells.
Right now it is too early to have any specifics as to the criteria of the study or even where the study will be conducted.

Macular Degeneration - Stem Cell Therapy
by Frances
(United States)
My mother had cataract surgery on one of her eyes.
She has macular degeneration in both of her eyes, one less than the other.
She had a cataract removed from her so called good eye.
It was not successful.
She sees worse now than before.
I have just heard about stem cell experimental treatment for her condition.
Do you know anything about this. Would Dr. Lipshitz know? I would love to consult with someone about it.
All the best,
Frances

Hi Frances,
I'm sorry to hear that your mother's vision got worse after her cataract surgery. Many people report that their macular degeneration get's worse after cataract surgery although some studies will dispute this.
The stem cells study for macular degeneration is just getting started. It is a Phase I study meaning it is looking only at safety - not efficacy. Only a maximum of 12 people will be enrolled at the Jules Stein Eye Institute in California. The research has a long ways to go before it becomes FDA approved and that will only happen if it is found to be safe and effective.
Thanks for checking with us.

Thank you so much for your informative news letter. In the past year I have discovered that I need much more light to read up closer.
I have dry MD. What is happening in stem cell auto grafting? Does it look promising?
Well, thanks again for your most informative e-mail.
Keep up the good work.

MY NAME IS LEE AND I AM NEW TO YOUR GROUP.
FIRST I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I ONLY WISH WE WOULD HAVE CONNECTED SIX YEARS OR SO AGO., JUST DELIGHTED TO BE ABOARD.
ANY WAY WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE ABOVE SUBJECT AS I AM IN CONTACT WITH THEM REGARDING MY AMD WHICH IS BOTH WET AND DRY OF WHICH THE WET SIDE CENTER IS GONE AND 75% OF THE DRY IS GONE.
I AM IN DISCUSSION WITH THE ABOVE REGARDING STEM CELLS INTO ONE OR THE OTHER.
AS I AM SURE YOU KNOW THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE OUTSIDE OF THE GOOD OLD US OF A.

Welcome Lee. I'm glad you found us. There currently is a Phase I clinical trial at Jules Stein Institute in California looking at using stem cells for the treatment of dry macular degeneration. Read more about this current macular degeneration research here:
