Macular Degeneration Lutein

Macular degeneration lutein - you will often hear these words together.

Lutein for Macular Degeneration

That is because lutein is an important carotenoid for the health of your macula.

The macula is a small spot in the back of your retina that is responsible for our straight ahead vision and for our detailed, sharp vision. When the photoreceptor cells of the macula start to degenerate their is a loss of vision.

Lutein for the Eyes

The macular pigment (MP) is found in the macula - the center of the retina with the highest concentration found in the fovea (the center of the macula). It is responsible for protecting our eyes from the harmful effects of free radical and blue light.

The MP is made of two carotenoids:

1. Lutein is the main carotenoid in the peripheral retina, making up 67% or greater

2. Zeaxanthin is the main carotenoid in the central macula making up to 75% of the MP

Increasing the concentration of these pigments in the eye may help prevent age-related macular degeneration.

Lutein Dosage

How much lutein does a person need or how much lutein should a supplement include? This is an important question because the body does not manufacture lutein. You must eat foods high in lutein every day and/or supplement.

The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 recommends:

4-8 milligrams per day

The macular degeneration and lutein research recommends:

6-10 milligrams per day for macular degeneration for maximum benefits of protection

The typical American consumes:

about 1-2 milligrams per day

FloraGlo

If you decide to supplement with lutein, look for the FloraGLO Lutein ingredient logo in your vitamins for eyes. Why?

1) It is patented in the U.S., Canada and other countries

2) It is a quality ingredient included in many lutein capsules for its stability and potency

3) Is used in many of the macular degeneration clinical trials

There are several more good reasons to look for this ingredient. If you want to learn more click here:

Zeaxanthin Lutein

Zeaxanthin is the second carotinoid that makes up the macular pigment. Several lutein supplements also include this important antioxidant.

Many eye vitamins now include lutein or a person can take it as a single ingredient.
