Macular Degeneration Implant

Do you have any information on the Intraocular Telescopic Implant developed by Dr. Lipshitz?

If so, is there a doctor in the South that does the procedure? (Louisiana) And, do you know if it is covered by Medicare?

Thanks.

Hi Tommie,

It still looks like it is only available in Europe. Here is a link to the Lipshitz ocular implant website if you want to read more about it:

Thanks so much for bringing the Lipshitz macular implant to our attention.

Vision Care Ophthalmic Technologies is a company in California that is co-founded by Dr. Isaac Lipshitz and Yossi Gross. Dr Isaac Liptshitz is the physician who developed the implantable miniature telescope(IMT).

Dr. Lipshitz also co-founded the OptoLight Vision Technology with Yariv Lipshitz. He developed the Lipshitz Macular Implant or LMI.

This device utilizes mirrors which results in a telescopic effect. It can be implanted in both eyes. Patients gain central vision magnification without loss to their peripheral vision. It is currently available in Europe.

Is the Lipshitz macular degeneration implant FDA approved? Is it being used in Stargardts disease? Thank you.

Hi Reader,

Thanks for your question. The implant is not FDA approved so the Lipshitz macular degeneration implant is not available in the United States.

Here is an e-interview that Dr. Lipshitz did with WebRN-MacularDegeneration:

Macular Degeneration Telescope

Where can I find information on the telescope implanted in the eye for macular degeneration, as shown on the news last week?

This is quite an exicting treatment option for those with advanced macular degeneration. Well known eye centers like Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute in Baltimore, Maryland and Emory Eye Center in Atlanta were some of the study sites. Over 200 patients participated in the study.

However, not everyone with macular degeneration is a candidate and there are eligibilty requirements to be considered for this treatment.
