Macular Degeneration - Air Travel

by Mary
(USA)

Is Is it safe to travel by air or is the cabin pressure too much for someone receiving injections for macular degeneration?

REPLY

Hi Mary,

There should not be any concerns with flying after receiving intravitreal injections for macular degeneration.

The concern arises when gas is injected into the eye or put into the eye during an operation. As long as no gas is in the eye, there is no concern with gas expansion at different altitudes.

In theory, if the gas expands too fast, the eye pressure could become dangerously high.

Macular Degeneration Diet

by Sam
(United States)

Where can I get a copy or a book about the macular degeneration diet or perhaps a cookbook?

Answer

Sam, I'm so glad to hear about your interest in a diet that will promote your health and health to your macula. Macular degeneration is a condition that is very responsive to and very closely tied to nutrition - good nutrition that promotes a healthy body and a healthy macula or poor eating habits that contribute to an unhealthy body and macula.

There is no one book that offers a macular degeneration diet, but there is a really good book about diet with recipes written by an ophthalmologist and macular degeneration specialist called Macular Degeneration: A Complete Guide for Patients and Their Families by Dr. Michael A. Samuel.

Another good book written by an ophthalmologist whose father had macular degeneration, that includes some recipes and diet tips is Macular Degeneration: The Complete Guide to Saving and Maximing Your Sight

Here is a link to my Macular Degeneration Diet page that tells you more about what steps to take to make your diet more "macular friendly."
