Does diet help dry macular degeneration?

REPLY

Hi Peggy,

According to Lylas G. Mogk, M. D. director of the Visual Rehabilitation and Research Center of Michigan,

"Even if you already have macular degeneration, you may be able to slow its progress by the choices you make in the grocery store."

Another retina doctor, Dr. Michael Samuel, writes in his book, Macular Degeneration: A Complete Guide for Patients and Their Families
,

"Early dry macular degeneration can be prevented, slowed or even reversed with diet and lifestyle changes."

Macular Degeneration Diet - Do Diet & Supplements Really Make a Difference?

by Ronnie
(NJ)

My Mother & her brother both have AMD, dry in one eye and wet in the other. I take Lutein (20 mg) & Zeaxanthin (4.75 mg) every day, but every time I go for an eye appointment I'm afraid my doctor will tell me that he sees drusen (so far, he hasn't...I'm 59).

If AMD is genetic, could taking these supplements actually make a difference as to whether I will or won't get this disease? I've always heard that "you can't beat your genes".

Hi Ronnie,

What a great question. Just to let you know we are in the same boat as you - my husband's father and the father's brothers also had AMD and my husband is the same age as you. So far his eye checkups have been good as well with no sign of drusen.

But we are not going to sit back and see what happens. What I love about nutrition and diet is that it helps us to be proactive rather than passive about our health. The improvements we are making in our diet and eye supplements not only benefit our eyes but the rest of our bodies as well.

Of course taking lutein and zeaxanthin supplements is a good place to start, but there are so many other nutritional things you can do to support a healthy body and healthy eyes. Eliminating harmful foods is just as important as including healthy foods.

Two of my favorite macular degeneration books written by ophthalmologists,Macular Degeneration: The Complete Guide to Saving and Maximizing Your Sight and Macular Degeneration: A Complete Guide for Patients and Their Families devote several chapters to diet, nutrition, and supplements.

Sources of Lutein

by Joyce
(Scottsdale, AZ)

I've read that lutein is good for our eyes and for macular degeneration. How do I get more in my diet?

Answer

Lutein is a carotenoid that gives vegetables like carrots their orange color. It is found in

1) the lens of your eyes and

2) the retina, especially the macula.

Lutein benefits the macular pigment by increasing the density of the macular pigment and helps with cataract prevention.

The body cannot make this antioxidant so you must get it from food or supplements. It is found in a wide variety of foods.
