Macular Degeneration Antioxidants

Macular degeneration antioxidants play a key role in the prevention and progression of macular degeneration.

Cause of Macular Degeneration

"Almost every single one of the risk factors we have for macular degeneration can be linked to free radicals."

Lylas Mogk, M.D. Visual Rehabilitation and Research Center of Michigan.

Many of the risk factors causes of macular degeneration that contribute to the development of AMD can be tied to free radicals and the damage they cause.

Causes such as:

sunlight,

smoking, and

environmental toxins,

all result in free radical damage which are especially toxic to our eyes and to the rest of our body. Click here to learn more: Antioxidant and Free Radicals

Antioxidant Benefits to the Macula

How do macular degeneration antioxidants help? Antioxidants supply the missing electron that is needed to balance the free radical so that the cell is neutralized and now unable to cause damage and injury to healthy cells and tissue.

Antioxidants are a powerful, silent weapon working to protect our cells and our bodies from inflammation, degenerative diseases, cancer and macular degeneration. Click here to read more: Benefits of Antioxidants

Antioxidant Fruits

Antioxidant fruits provide protection from free radical damage. There are many benefits to eating fruits high in antioxidants over supplementing with a single, isolated antioxidants. They are:

1) Provide many cofactors and combination of nutrients that offer more protection than a single, isolated nutrient.

2) Offer a slow release and steady and more sustained protective effect. Supplements often result in a brief spike in blood plasma antioxidant levels.

Blueberries Health Benefits

Blueberries are one of the best macular degeneration antioxidants. USDA scientists Dr. Ronald Prior and Dr. Guohua Cao have demonstrated that blueberries contain the highest antioxidant capacity of the 40 different fruits and vegetables tested.

"The antioxidant characteristics in blueberries appear to be due largely to anthocyanins," said Dr. Prior, whose has been a key researcher in the role of antioxidants.

Wild blueberries contain one of the highest anthocyanin levels of berries commercially available in North America.

Goji Fruit

Goji fruit are berries that benefit the macula as a result of their high antioxidant compounds, including zeaxanthin.

Zeaxanthin, along with lutein, make up the macular pigment, which protects our eyes from the harmful effects of light.

Although there are a lot of claims as to goji berries benefits that may be hard to verify, one thing is sure - they are full of great nutrition. To learn more click here: Goji Fruit

Antioxidant Health Supplement

The body can make some needed antioxidants such as

coenzyme Q10,

melatonin, and

glutathione,

Due to poor soil conditions, early harvesting, storage, and genetically modified foods, it may not be possible to get all the antioxidant protection we need from our food.

Lutein for Macular Degeneration

The best known macular degeneration antioxidants are lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein is found in some of the less popular vegetables, such as:

kale

collard greens

Swiss chard

Zeaxanthin Benefits Your Eyes

Zeaxanthin is another pigment found in the retina that helps to protect our vision.

The macular pigment provides protection to the retina from the damaging free radicals of sunlight.

The cone cells , which are responsible for detailed central vision, have a high concentration of zeaxanthin.

Low levels of macular pigment are often found in eyes with age related macular degeneration (AMD) and in those with risk factors for AMD.

Now you can understand why it is so important to include this antioxidant in your diet. Many of you have probably heard of the popular goji juice - it is one way to get more zeaxanthin in your diet. Click here for more food ideas: Zeaxanthin
