Macular Degeneration - Acupuncture

by Laura
(United States)

I am an acupuncturist who's mother has just been dx with wet macular degeneration. She's 85 y/o.

I'd be interested in the acupuncture protocol that was done. Could you please send me the link?

Thanks,
Laura

Macular Degeneration Acupuncture - Los Angeles

by Annette
(Los Angeles, CA)

Can you recommend an acupuncturist in Los Angeles that treats macular edema?

My friend has been asked to participate in a clinical trial for Lucentis. What's your opinion about that?

Answer

Hello Annette,

Natural Eye Care has a database where you can search for acupuncturists in California. To perform a search copy and paste this address into your browser:

http://www.naturaleyecare.com/doctors.asp?doctortypeid=2&city=&state=ca&zip=&countrycode=US&submitted=1

Participating in clinical trials is a very personal choice. The questions I would ask before deciding are:

1. What phase is the clinical trial in. To learn more about these phases click here:

Clinical Trial Phases

2. What is the purpose of the study

3. What treatment is involved. How often and for how long is the treatment given.

4. What are the possible side effects and benefits.

5. Depending on the study, there are usually several treatment arms. In other words, different groups may get different treatment or a placebo.
Find out what other treatments are part of the study or if some groups will be getting a placebo.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,
Leslie Degner, RN, BSN

Acupuncture and Macular Degeneration

by Akal
(India)

I am 21 years old. I suffer from macular degeneration. I don't use any aid.

Will acupuncture treatment help improve my condition? Does it have any side effects.

Answer

Hi Akal,

I am assuming because you are 21 years old that you have some form of Juvenile Macular Degeneration.

Why aren't you using any visual aids or magnifiers? Can you see well without them yet?

Acupuncture is a type of alternative medicine, that although there is limited research on its effectiveness, there are case studies of patients seeing improvement in their vision.
