Lutein Dosage

The lutein dosage in an eye supplement is important to know.

Macular Degeneration and Lutein

High concentrations lutein are found in the macular pigment. The macular pigment is known to provide protection against macular degeneration and cataracts.

The body does not manufacture or make lutein. You must eat foods high in lutein every day and/or supplement.

So the question is how much do I need?

The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 recommends:

4-8 milligrams per day

The research recommends:

6-10 milligrams per day for macular degeneration for maximum benefits of protection

The typical American consumes:

about 1-2 milligrams per day

Lutein 10 mg

The conclusions from the Dose-Ranging Study of Lutein Supplementation in Persons Aged 60 Years or Older were:

"Increasing doses of lutein supplements significantly increased the serum levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, and doses up to 10 mg were safely administered.

A long-term large clinical trial is necessary to investigate the safety and efficacy of lutein in reducing the risk of the development of advanced AMD."

AREDS 2 Ingredients

AREDS2 was designed to evaluate the effects of high supplemental doses of lutein and zeaxanthin and omega-3 LCPUFAs on the development of advanced AMD. This trial is ongoing but it is not recruiting new participants. Listed are the ingredients for each arm.

There are three arms to this study, two of which include lutein and zeaxanthin.

Arm 1

Lutein 10 mg and zeaxanthin 2 mg (1 tablet)

Placebo-DHA/EPA (2 soft-gel capsules)

Arm 2

350 mg DHA and 650 mg EPA (2 soft-gel capsules)

Placebo-lutein/zeaxanthin (1 tablet)

Arm 3

10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin (1 tablet)

350 mg DHA and 650 mg EPA (2 soft-gel capsules)

Bausch and Lomb Preservision has an AREDS 2 formula that includes the 10 mg of lutein called PreserVision Eye Vitamin and Mineral Supplement AREDS 2 Formula.

There is 5 mg of lutein in one capsule and the recommended dosage is two capsules per day.

Zeaxanthin with Lutein

Most lutein supplements also include zeaxanthin as they are the two carotenoids found in the macular pigment. The two are usually found together in food sources as well.

The lutein with zeaxanthin supplement that we take is from Natural Eye Care.

It contains South American Zeaxanthin (concentrated from pesticide-free South American marigold – not from a synthetic source. It provides 6 mg per Vcap.

The lutein source is from South American Lutein that is concentrated from pesticide-free South American marigold – not synthetic sources. It provides 3.5 mg per Vcap.
