by Maria
(St.Petersburg (Russia) / Edmonton (AB Canada))
Dear Leslie!
I am 25 years old and was diagnosed with Stadgardt's desease 10 years ago. My vision dropped significantly and I think it has stabilised now on the certain level.
However, I have not been able to fully adapt to the vision loss and am experiencing a major psychological dificulties that I canot work out on my own anymore. I have heard there are low vision specialist working with people like me who can help find the suitable vision aids and refer to a special councelling therapy (not every psychologist would understand the special nature of issuies the visualy impaired have).
Could you please help me with where to find those specialists in Alberta (Canada) or St.Petersburg/Moscow (Russia)?
Thank you Leslie.

Hello Maria,
The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) offers many services locally to those with vision problems like macular degeneration.
They have a webstore or you can ask for a free catalogue to order magnifying lamps or other visual aids. They also provide some great classes and support at their offices. For example they offer computer classes to teach you how to use magnifying software like Zoomtext. Here is the info on the Edmonton office.

Low Vision Store
by Amy
(Indianapolis, IN)
Is there a store in or near Indianapolis where we can try out these products? Thank you!
Answer
Amy, ideally, this is the best thing to do before making expensive low vision purchases. Depending on the store, usually you need to make an appointment so that someone is available to discuss your needs with them.
Before you go think carefully about what you want help with. What tasks do you especially find challenging - i.e. reading, writing bills, cooking, sewing, using your phone etc.
Different tasks require different visual aids. So be prepared to identify those areas before you go.
I found one low vision store in Indianapolis.
The Vision Aid Systems
Phone: 317-888-0323
E-mail: visionaidsystems@juno.com
The store address is:
916 E Main St Suite 114 Greenwood, IN 46143

Low Vision Store - London
by Hans
(London, UK)
Dear Ms Degner, I am grateful for the information you are providing, but the links you are providing often are products which are quoted in U.S. $ - i.e. imports. Is there any shop in London in which one can see and try LED magnifyers? Many Thanks.

Hi Hans,
The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) offers many low vision services. They also have a store on their website of different magnifiers. Here is a link:

Low Vision Services

I am not a quitter, but since I contracted this disease I had to give up a lot - successful trucking & construction company, among many other things like night driving & rainy day driving.
Is there anything out there to help these activities? I am 55 yrs. old & working on my GED now. I would like & value your opinion on a work field you think would be possible to be back productive in?
Thanks again.

Low Vision Specialists - North Carolina
by Betty
(Wilmington NC 28412)
I had Lucentis injections and cataract surgery.
I am 80 years old and loosing my eye sight. It has saddened me more then anything in my life.
I am seeing a retina doctor now. My sight is getting real bad. The Dr. says I am legally blind now.
I can see if things are very light and very close.
I have had all kinds of glasses but they do not help.
My retina doctor from WILMINGTON NC says that stem cells are probably my only hope. Can you please help me.
REPLY
Hi Betty,
I am sorry to hear that you have lost so much of your vision. You said that none of the glasses you have used have helped you.
Have you seen a low vision specialist who can help you with low vision magnifiers and vision aids for macular degeneration? Click on this link to low vision rehab to find someone in your area:
Low Vision Rehab
You also said you have had Lucentis injections - which means you probably have wet macular degeneration. At this time there are 2 macular degeneration studies in North Carolina for macular degeneration - however, these two studies require that there is no previous treatment for your AMD - so the Lucentis injections would exclude you from these studies.
Take Care,
Leslie Degner, RN, BSN

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is the UK's non-profit low vision service. It offers information, support and advice to people with sight loss.
In the United States, a low vision center like this one would also not only suggest but provide low vision magnifiers. Please contact them to see how they can help you or your loved one. Here is a link to their website:

P.S. Dear Readers,
Please do not let the words "blind people" prevent you from getting help from one of these centers. My father-in-law resisted services from his local agency - because he said, "He was not blind." Which is true - but they have many ways of assisting those with macular degeneration.

Low Vision Magnifiers - New Zealand
by Stella
(New Zealand)
Hello Leslie, First let me congratulate you on your newsletter.
I find it very helpful and informative. My reason for subscribing was to gain information that may assist my brother who has dry ARMD. Leslie, I wonder if you could offer some advice or assistance with the purchase of low vision aids that may assist him with newspaper reading.
He has just been diagnosed with ARMD and has been unable to read his daily newspaper. Looking at the report from his optometrist it says " with best corrected visual acuity what magnification is required to read newsprint at 25 cm? 4x with Bifocal on. I searched some of the sites on low vision aids mentioned in your newsletters. as these aids do not appear to be available in New Zealand.
I even sent as message to one of these low vision centers over a week ago, I think its called The International Academy of Low Vision Specialists seeking assistance on purchase of reading glasses and magnifiers. Have not had a reply yet. Would really appreciate any advice you can provide with purchasing the correct type of glasses and magnifiers as its a bit to expensive to travel from NZ to USA for a evaluation at one of the low vision aid Co's.
I am anxious to get things moving as my brother is getting slightly depressed.
He loved his newspaper and loved the independence of driving himself to garden centres, supermarkets etc. And now because he can only read the top line on the eye chart doctor said he would fail the eye test. Strangely enough Leslie, I have been out with him in the car quite a few times over the past few weeks and his driving is really good. in and out of the city. If it is of any help, the eye chart provided by one of the sites in your newsletter to determine vision, he can read the top line which says he requires 10x40D magnification. Sincerely hope you can provide any helpful information in determining what magnification of glasses and magnifiers would suit his condition.
I should also mention he has a small cataract in the eye that has the ARMD. The other eye is a lazy eye he has not been able to see clearly out of it since his teen years. Look forward to your reply Regards Stella
REPLY
Thank-you Stella for your e-mail and your willingness to help your brother who has dry AMD.
Depression is quite common for those with macular degeneration, especially if or when they give up activities that are very meaningful to them.
I was unable to find a low vision center in New Zealand when I performed an internet search. It would be best to have your brother talk to his eye care specialist and ask for a recommendation to see a low vision specialist.
The specialist can then make recommendations for low vision magnifiers to assist your brother in the tasks he enjoys - such as reading the daily newspaper.
The full page magnifier may or may not work for him.
A very helpful, but expensive magnifier with a large viewing area, would be a low vision CCTV.
Again, these recommendations would need to come from a low vision specialist. If that is not possible, then a person could buy a low vision magnifier on line, check out the return policy, and then have your brother try it.
Kind Regards,
Leslie Degner, RN, BSN

Macular Degeneration - Low Vision Services
by Jina

Looking for resources, esp. low vision specialists, in New Mexico or the panhandle of Texas (Amarillo, Lubbock).
We could even travel as far as the Ft. Worth/Dallas Tx area. When I inquired of my mother's opthalmologist what resources were available, he seemed totally unaware of the rehab/OT/resource concept!
I'm glad we are nurses!

Jordy Glasses for macular degeneration
by George
(Australia)
My father has is 82 yo, and has aged related macular dgeneration, and very poor vision. We only just heard of, what apparently, is an 'old' product, called JORDY glasses. Unfortunately these are not available in Australia where we live, and no one seems to be able to provide us with any basic information.
I am in the process of trying to procure them from the US, if I can find a source that deals with international orders. What I am somewhat confused is, and I have seen references to is, what vision test results are required by the seller to ascertain if the glasses will be appropriate for dad?
I guess I can just go ahead and purchase them if I locate a seller, but at that price, I'd like to know they are appropriate, or perhaps dad's condition is so bad that they will be a waste of money and hope.
If you can provide any assistance, we would be most grateful,
Regards, George
REPLY
Hi George,
You are right about a couple of things - the JORDY glasses are being phased out. So this may not be a good purchase at this time.
Low vision aids like these are very expensive, so it is best to get a recommendation from a low vision specialist who can evaluate your father and then provide some training.
Would you like me to see what low vision stores or rehab are available in Australia? If so let me know what the closest large city is to your father.
Kind Regards,
Leslie Degner, RN, BSN

Here is the response I received from Enhanced Vision. They do have some JORDY glasses and have a contact for you in Australia.
