Low Vision CCTV - Max Digital Video Magnifier
by Barbara
(Gainesville, TX, USA)
If I order Max Digital Video Magnifier - Black and White today, can you ship early enough for me to receive in Gainesville, TX by July 30? Also, is it returnable if magnification is not great enough? My Dad lives in another town, and I am going to visit him on July 31, and I need to have him try it to see if it is large enough magnification.

Hi Barbara,
These are good questions to ask before you make an expensive purchase for something like a video magnifier. First let me explain that I personally do not sell items on my website. These links to low vision aids may be through Google ads, an Amazon store or through another affiliate program.
Which means that for your convenience I have put up pictures or links to items I talk about on a certain page.
If you do make a purchase after clicking on a link, the order is made through that company. Each company has different shipping and return policies. So if you were wanting to purchase the video magnifier through Amazon, the actual company is Active Forever. Their website states that it takes 6-10 days for an item to be shipped. Their return policy is pricey - if the item does not work for your father you would have to pay shipping back and a 15% restocking fee. The customer service number is 1-800-377-8033.
My suggestion, if it is possible, is to find a low vision store in the area where he lives or bring him to a low vision specialist where he can try some different video magnifiers to see what works best for him. When going to the store he should bring things like a prescription bottle, a magazine or photo where he can actually test and see how helpful this technology would be for him. Then the two of you can decide what video magnifier best fits his need and your price.

Low Vision CCTV

Hi Leslie,
I'm contacting you regarding my father. He has very low vision due to advanced wet macular degeneration.
He is a retired architect/mathematician and is still doing calculations and he writes articles. Unfortunately, he can't see his scientific calculator well anymore. We looked around for a scientific calculator with illumination and large keys/letters, but that doesn't seem to exist.
A CCTV magnifier might be the solution. He is 86 years old.
As he is very passionate about his mathematical activities, such an improvement will make his life much easier. He is frustrated that he can not use his scientific calculator well anymore. You might be able to find the right item for him.
Thank you very much. Sincerely, Nilufer

Hello Nilufer,
Thank you for your question and for your desire to help your father. A low vision CCTV may be the best option for him as you suggested.
Because these are very expensive magnifiers, my suggestion is to ask your father's low vision specialist which brand or make they like and what features their favorite one has to offer.
You can also have a low vision CCTV representative come to your father's house for a free, no pressure demonstration of how these electronic magnifiers work. I would recommend that another person be there for the demo just to help learn the features and uses of these magnifiers. They are actually very simple to operate. My father has macular degeneration in one eye and is having difficulty reading. He is 91, very active, as well as he actively pursues coin collecting.
We have looked online at different CCTVs and would like to have a demonstration of which type would be best for him.
I would like to know if Medicare pays for any part of these if his physician writes a prescription. Thank you.

I have taken many pills of vitamines etc. and got all tests done at RP Centre new Delhi and as for as my information yet no treatment is available.
I have purchased many low vision aids including Dr. H. M. Shah Calcutta spects but I did not get any helpas I expected.
Now you please tell me what sort of suggestions or treatments you have in your centre for me.
What reading or other aids do you have in your centre for me.
My vision in left eye is 6/48 and right 6/60.
Do you have any office or contact person in INDIA ?
If yes. Please contact me & details.
Amit
Hi Amit,
It sounds like you may benefit from an electronic magnifier.
These low vision magnifiers can magnify reading, pictures, etc. at a much higher power than a regular magnifier. A desktop magnifier is another name for a low vision CCTV. CCTV stands for closed circuit television.
They work with by using a special camera that focuses on what you want to see (i.e. a page, pill bottle, a check, a photograph etc,) and displays it on a large screen where it can be magnified to a font that is comfortable for you.

Hands Free Reading Magnifier
by Laura
(United States)
Howdy! My Father-in-law has Parkinson's Disease.
He suffers from double vision as well as the physical limitations of this disease.
I am trying to do research on large print books, magazines and newspapers as well as magnifiers.
He still loves to read - which is something we want to encourage. Are you aware of any magnifiers that can be slid on the paper that can magnify to about 16-18 font?
The magnifier can not be handheld or on a stand - he will knock it over. It also must be durable - because he will most probably drop it too. Thank you for any information you can share. Taking it day by day...Laura Buben

Hi Laura,
Thanks for your question. Full page magnifiers provide the benefit of a large viewing area, but don't have the magnifying power that your father needs.
It may be worth his while to check out a low vision CCTV as they can magnify at the power your father needs and are hands free.
It is best to bring him to a low vision specialist for recommendations, but if that is not possible Enhanced Vision provides free in home demonstrations so that your father can see if that would work for him.

Portable Electronic Magnifier
by Sobhan
(India)
I'm a student with severe eye problems. I heard of a device the can electronically magnify printed material and is portable.
I'll be really grateful.
REPLY
Hi Sobhan,
Yes, portable electronic magnifiers allow a person to magnify at much high powers than any regular handheld magnifier. Other features like adjustable brightness and adjustable contrast makes it even easier to see and read where ever you are.
Fill out the form on this page and I will forward it to a representative to get in contact with you.
