Liquid Fish Oil

Liquid fish oil is one way to get your Nordic fish oil. Some people prefer getting their omega 3's this way rather than in a capsule.

Fish Oil Dosage

People who need to consume higher amounts of fish oil, will find that taking the liquid form is easier than swallowing lots of capsules. Be sure to refrigerate it after the bottle has been opened.

There are some good tasting (well maybe better tasting) liquid fish oils available. You can take it by itself or try to "hide" the taste by putting on on your salad or add it to your smoothie.

What to Look For

1. Flavored - Try a flavored brand with a hint of natural lemon extract or orange for better taste

2. Molecularly distilled - a process that filters out all contaminants and toxins

You can find a variety of bottle sizes and prices. Although buying capsules may appear cheaper, the liquid fish oils are cheaper per milligram.

Carlson's Fish Oil

Carlsons Fish Oil comes from deep, cold, ocean-water fish. It is processed and bottled in Norway.

It is taken by the teaspoonful. You can mix this liquid fish oil with foods or put it on your salad. Lemon and orange flavored oils are available.

Carlson's fish oils are regularly tested

1. using AOAC international protocols

2. for freshness,

3. potency and

4. purity

by an independent, FDA-registered laboratory and has been determined to be fresh, fully potent and free of detectable levels of mercury, cadmium, lead, PCB's and 28 other contaminants.

Nordic Natural Fish Oil

Another well respected brand of Nordic fish oils is Nordic Naturals. Their fish oil is 3rd party tested for purity. It is molecularly distilled and is considered a pharmaceutical grade fish oil.

Each serving of Nordic Natural fish oil provides approximately 1725 mg of important omega-3 fatty acids.

It easily meets the the daily recommendation by international experts of a minimum of 500 mg per day. Since the body cannot produce these fats, they must be consumed through diet or supplementation.

Every batch is third-party tested for environmental toxins, including heavy metals, dioxins, and PCBs. All Nordic Naturals fish oils surpass the international standards for purity and freshness.

It has no gluten, milk derivatives, or artificial colors.

How Much Fish Oil?

According to Medline:

"For healthy adults with no history of heart disease, the American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least twice weekly. In particular, fatty fish are recommended, such as anchovies, bluefish, carp, catfish, halibut, herring, lake trout, mackerel, pompano, salmon, striped sea bass, tuna (albacore), and whitefish. It is also recommended to consume plant-derived sources of α-linolenic acid, such as tofu/soybeans, walnuts, flaxseed oil, and canola oil.

The World Health Organization and governmental health agencies of several countries recommend consuming

0.3-0.5 grams of daily EPA + DHA and

0.8-1.1 grams of daily α-linolenic acid. A doctor and pharmacist should be consulted for dosing for other conditions."

Omega 3's compete with Omega 6's

According to Medline:

"In Western diets, people consume roughly 10 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids. These large amounts of omega-6 fatty acids come from the common use of vegetable oils containing linoleic acid (for example: corn oil, evening primrose oil, pumpkin oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, walnut oil, and wheatgerm oil).

Because omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids compete with each other to be converted to active metabolites in the body, benefits can be reached either by decreasing intake of omega-6 fatty acids or by increasing omega-3 fatty acids."
