Magnifying Glass with Light
A magnifying glass with light provides the two most important aids for someone with low vision - light and magnification. Lighting needs change for those with macular degeneration - they need much more light than those with normal vision. These types of macular degneration magnifiers are used for spot reading - like looking up a phone number, reading a prescription bottle or looking at a recipe card.
Magnifying Light
A magnifying light that is often used in macular degeneration magnifiers is an LED light. LED stands for Light Emitting Diodes. These light bulbs are small and extremely energy-efficient. One of the benefits to this type of lighting is its longevity. They often last for 1,000's of hours. The advantage of using a lighted magnifier is that you can reduce the magnification power that you need and you will be able to see or read labels, menus, etc. with less eye strain.
Lighted Hand Held Magnifier
A lighted hand held magnifier is small enough to carry in your purse or pocket.Take one with you whenever you go out. It will come in handy to read a menu, a price tag, or labels. These magnifiers do require batteries. My father-in-law who has wet AMD likes the ones that take a AAA battery because they are easy and inexpensive to replace.
