LED Magnifier
Lighted Magnifying GlassMy father-in-law who has wet AMD finds that his favorite vision aid is a lighted magnifying glass - especially ones that use LED lights. LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are small, solid light bulbs which are extremely energy-efficient. Some of the benefits of the LED light are:A soft white light,without harsh reflection, glare or shadows.
Long-lasting - LED bulbs last up to 10 times as long as compact fluorescents, and far longer than typical incandescents. Durable - Durable bulbs with no fragile filaments to break from shaking and rattling. Because they are solid, LED bulbs hold up well to jarring and bumping. Cool - these bulbs do not cause heat build-up; LEDs produce 3.4 btu's/hour, compared to 85 for incandescent bulbs. Mercury-free - no mercury is used in the manufacturing of LEDs. More efficient - LED light bulbs use only 2-10 watts of electricity (1/3rd to 1/30th of Incandescent or CFL).
Magniyfing LightAs your macular degeneration progresses you will need different magnifiers for different tasks more magnification and more light. With a LED magnifier you are getting both, with a light that does not produce glare or shadows. As with any magnifier purchase for your macular degeneration you first need to determine: 1) What task you will use it for 2) What power magnification you need There are many different LED magnifier styles to choose from. A good source for inexpensive, lighted hand held magnifiers is MaxiAids. I have ordered several of these lighted magnifiers for my father-in-law to carry in his pocket and to keep around the house. His favorite lighted magnifier is the pocket magnifier. It provides 3X magnification. It was easy to order on line and the delivery was very quick.
