Electronic Book Readers

kindle 2

Kindle 2 is one of several electronic book readers. This wireless reading device offers

enlarged fonts and

text to speech reading capabilities -

a great visual aid for those with macular degeneration.

The price has dropped from $259 to $189. But the real savings is in the low price of downloading books.

Kindle Reader

What's so appealing about the Kindle Reader is that there is no monthly subscription fee and no need to first download to a computer and then to the device.

This means you can be almost anywhere and quickly and easily download a book to your wireless reader. It uses the same technology as cell phones - so if you can get a phone signal you can download a Kindle ebook or newspaper - quickly - in less than 60 seconds.

E Book Reader

The Amazon e book reader offers several advantages over a hard copy book for those with macular degeneration.

They are:

1. Ability to adjust contrast

2. No glare screen

3. Any book, newspaper, or periodical can now be read in large print

4. Lightweight and portable

5. No need for a computer

6. No monthly fees, unlike a book club

Adjustable Text Size

You can increase the text size of your favorite book or periodical by simply pushing a button. If your eyes tire, just increase the font size and continue reading comfortably.

Kindle 2 has six adjustable font sizes. Here you will see the corresponding Microsoft Word font size.

1 = 7pt

2 = 9pt

3 = 11 pt

4 = 14 pt

5 = 17 pt

6 = 20 pt

Now every book in your library can be large print. You can now read large print newspapers as well.

No Glare

Kindle provides a crisp black-and-white screen.

The screen works using ink, just like books and newspapers, but displays it electronically.

There is no backlighting, which eliminates the glare you experience with other types of electronics - like cell phones or Blackberries.

As a result, Kindle can be read easily in bright sunlight if you are outdoors or in your living room.

Text to Speech Converter

With the new text-to-speech feature, Kindle 2 can read to you anything you have downloaded whether it is a newspaper, amagazine, a blog and or a book, unless the book is disabled by the rights holder.

The voice is computer generated but sounds very much like a human voice, and although it is not as good as an actor reading a book it is way better than the old robotic sounding voice.

You can switch back and forth between reading and listening, and your spot is automatically saved. Pages automatically turn while the content is being read, so you can listen hands-free.

You can choose from both male and female voices which can be sped up or slowed down to suit your preference. If you get tired of reading and want to listen to the next chapter? Simply turn on the Text-to-Speech feature and listen.

Read the Newspaper Again

Using Kindle's new 5-way controller, you can quickly flip between articles, making it easier to browse and read the morning paper.

Want to remember the newspaper or magazine article you just read? Clip and save entire articles for later reading with a single click.

Not sure how well this is going to work for you? You can try out your favorite newspaper subscription for two weeks for free and if you don't like it, cancel it.

Full Image Zoom

Images and photos display crisply on Kindle 2 and can be zoomed to the full size of the screen.

If it doesn't work, here is the return policy.

Reviews from those with Macular Degeneration

I can read again! April 29, 2009 By George L. Pagh

I love the Kindle 2! My eyesight has deteriorated due to age and Macular Degeneration and I had quit reading because of the strain it caused. Now I can enlarge the print so I can see the print with little effort. I am already half way through book three! Convenient, easy, compact and amazingly fast book delivery. I would give it 10 stars.

The Kindle has sparked hope for a Mom with Macular Degeneration, March 19, 2009 By Maureen King

What a wonderful device, arriving just at the time we needed it most. My mom has been receiving treatment for Macular Degeneration (wet) in both eyes, and recently the bleeding in her good eye returned.

Then the Kindle arrived, and she found the text to speech setting, the print size modifier, and it is a match made in heaven. She loves it, finds comfort in it, and uses it constantly.

The only better thing would be large print mah jongg tiles, and I'll find them yet! I love it too, as I can roll over in bed and read my NY Times with out sitting at a computer screen. Should be more marketing to the vision impaired for sure! A wonderful thing-can't wait for Kindle 3.

If you buy a lot of books, especially the costly large print editions, you will save money with the Kindle 2. Don't hesitate. Any one in the Charleston, SC area who would like to see mine, please let me know.

Significant help for macular degeneration, April 29, 2009 By James Howard

I have macular degeneration and find the Kindle 2 to be amazing help. I have always read many books and when I developed vision problems I had to revert to listening to books on tape. Kindle 2 has an adjustment to large print, in addition to audio, which is a tremendous help for me. It is small enough to enable me to take it when traveling.

Ideal for the elderly with progressive macular degeneration, May 22, 2009 By Regott

I've had the Kindle 2 for two days and have wondered how I ever lived without it. I have been able to acquire Classics that I have wanted to read for many years. Most books that I desire are available for quick transfer. The ability to control font size has allowed me to be able to read almost anywhere. Due to my progressive macular degeneration I was having difficulty reading the physical book. With the Kindle 2 I am able to control the distance the reading material is held from my eyes.

Kindle 2, June 8, 2009 Nancy L. Holforty

I bought the kindle for my 90 year old mother whose sight is slowly decreasing due to macular degeneration. She was able to learn how to use it quickly and I was able to adjust the print so that she could read without glasses. It was a very good product for her. To read more reviews click here:
