Goji Berry Juice
| Goji berry juice is a quick and easy way to get some great antioxidants, especially zeaxanthin which benefits our macula. |
Goji Berries Benefits
Rich in antioxidants, particularly carotenoids such as beta-carotene and
zeaxanthin,
these Chinese berries are commonly found in juices and teas or can be bought as a dried fruit.
Despite the berry's popularity, the scientific research on them is still in its infancy. "There is limited data on the wolfberry," said Mark Failla, chairman of the Human Nutrition Department at Ohio State University, who is studying the berry. Based on early research, Failla says it's clear that they contain extremely high levels of zeaxanthin, a carotenoid related to beta carotene." These antioxidant berries can be found at Chinese herbal shops while the juice can be bought in health food stores, online stores, and through network marketers. P.S.It is important to note that these berries may interact with anticoagulant drugs (commonly called "blood-thinners"), such as warfarin (Coumadin®).
Macular Pigment
We have added goji berry juice to our
macular degeneration diet
. What makes sense to me is the fact that it does contain high concentrations of zeaxanthin. Why do we care about zeaxanthin? It is one of the critical antioxidants in the
macular pigment
which protects the retina from the damaging rays of the sun. High levels of zeaxanthin are also found in the
cone cells
of the
macula.
The cone cells are responsible for sharp detailed vision. Low levels of macular pigment are found in those with
macular degeneration.
As part of our quest to prevent the development of macular degeneration we are adding foods that will help build our macular pigment. Goji berry juice is more easily absorbed than the berries. We've tried the berries, but found it is much easier to drink down a small glass of goji juice in the morning (on an empty stomach) before we head out to work. The juice we are drinking is the Genesis Goji Juice . I like the fact that it is pure juice - with no additives, sweeteners, water or other juices. It is not as sweet as other juices - but we like the taste of the juice better than the berries. A 32 oz bottle is expensive - around $32, but the recommended serving size is just 1 oz. For maximum benefits, once the bottle is opened it needs to be consumed in the next 30 days. It is also important to shake the bottle well before pouring yourself a glass.
