Full Spectrum Floor Lamps
| Full spectrum floor lamps provide an excellent source of light for reading or for performing hobbies like needlework or jig saw puzzles. |
Full Spectrum Light Bulbs
Full spectrum light bulbs are different from the familiar incandescent light bulbs. Incandescent lights give off more heat and cast shadows. Full spectrum lighting simulates daylight. This type of lighting allows for better contrast sensitivity (you can tell your black thread from navy blue thread) and visibility while reducing eye strain. This low vision lighting enhances color and contrast and mimics sunlight. However, some eye specialists warn against using full spectrum lights because it contains blue light which is known to cause damage to the retina. If you decide to use a full spectrum floor lamp or desk lamp be sure it is adjustable so that the light is directed to the task, hobby or reading.
Verilux Lamp
Consider a Verilux lamp if you want to try a full spectrum floor lamp. This lamp provides task lighting - it is not meant to brighten up a room. Some of its features are: 1. Has a gooseneck so you can adjust and direct the light 2. Has 2 levels of lighting 3. Includes a diffuser that reduces glare 4. Optimizes contrast 5. Improves detailed vision 6. Bulb lasts 10x longer than regular light bulb 7. Lightweight and can be easily moved around

Blue Light Hazard
There is some concern that blue light exposure can be harmful to our eyes. Here is what Dr. Lylas Mogk the author of states: "Although the laboratory studies on animals seem nearly unanimous, the real world studies on people have produced conflicting results. Some studies positively link macular degeneration with any kind of light exposure, other studies have found a weak correlation between macular degeneration and blue light exposure, and yet a third group of studies has found no correlation at all between macular degeneration and sunlight. One Australian study concluded that the problem is not total sun exposure, but exactly how sensitive you are to the sun." Dan Roberts, Founding Director Macular Degeneration Support, has a very thorough article on this topic at his website: Artifical Lighting and Blue Light Hazard
