Fish Oil Tablets

Fish oil tablets are a way to supplement your body's need for omega-3 essential fatty acids.

The body cannot make these oils, so we must get them from the food we eat. You may be surprised to find out that, the retina has some of the highest concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids in the body.

Fish Oil Pills

The oil is actually derived from the body of oily fish - like salmon, krill, mackerel, albacore tuna or the smaller fish like herring and sardines.

It has become increasingly more difficult to get the needed omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) into the American diet.

And we must get them ... from the food we eat or from fish oil tablets or liquid, because our body cannot manufacture them. Hence the name, essential fatty acids.

However, we are warned to limit the amount of fish we eat because of mercury and toxins, so a good alternative is to supplement with purified fish oil pills. Fish oil contains both omega-3 EFAS

docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and

eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA.

Vegetable oils like canola, soybean, flaxseed, and olive oil contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which the body can convert to omega-3s, but it is very inefficient.

What to Look For in Your Fish Oil Tablets

1. The source is labeled as well as the specific species of fish. For instance the one I am currently taking lists anchovy and sardine in the ingredients. Avoid plant sources of omega-3s.

2. Ideally , the total amount of EPA and DHA should add up to the total amount of oils in the product.

3. Provides 1000 mg of some combination of EPA and DHA.

4. Does not contain any omega-6 or omega-9s. We get these in many other ways naturally, and it is the omega-3's that most people are deficient in.

5. The fish oil should be pure, meaning that they are free of mercury, toxins and pesticides.

6. The oil should be pressed from only the flesh of the fish - not any internal organs, or the heads or tails

Fish Oil Dosage

These recommendations come from the American Heart Association.

1) Patients without documented coronary heart disease (CHD)

Eat a variety of (preferably fatty) fish at least twice a week. Include oils and foods rich in alpha-linolenic acid (flaxseed, canola and soybean oils; flaxseed and walnuts).

2) Patients with documented coronary artery disease

Consume about 1 g of EPA+DHA per day, preferably from fatty fish. EPA+DHA in capsule form could be considered in consultation with the physician.

3. Patients who need to lower triglycerides

2 to 4 grams of EPA+DHA per day provided as capsules under a physician’s care.

Patients taking more than 3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids from capsules should do so only under a physician’s care. High intakes could cause excessive bleeding in some people.
