Fish Oil Dosage

by Stephanie
(United States)

Is this product ok for senior 91 years of age, dementia, had bypass surgery 8 years ago?

She was chewing a fish oil tablet and I wanted to substitute a liquid.

REPLY

Hi Stephanie,

I am not sure what product you mean. But a liquid fish oil provides a higher dosage of omega 3's than do capsules. If she is on any type of blood thinner medication, you need to check with her doctor about how much fish oil she should take. Fish oils naturally thin the blood.

Foods High in Omega 3

by Jeff
(Plano, Texas)

I'm trying to get more good fat in my diet and wondered if you could tell me what foods are high in omega 3?

Thanks.

REPLY

Jeff, foods high in omega 3 are an important part of a macular degeneration diet. It is also important to know what fats to stay away from.

Fish Oil Health Benefits of Salmon

by Johnathan
(Turtle lake, WI, USA)

What are some studies that show why eating salmon is good for your health?

REPLY

Hi Jonathan,

I am glad to see that you are researching what constitutes an anti-inflammatory diet or a macular degeneration diet. There is plenty of research that supports the health benefits of getting our omega-3s from cold water fish like salmon.

DHA is a type of omega-3 fatty acid, an essential nutrient that has been studied for its role in heart, brain and eye health.

Although it is found in most tissues throughout the body, the highest concentrations of DHA are in:

1) the brain,

2) the nervous system and

3) the retina of the eye.

Omega 3 Benefits and Macular Degeneration

by Kurt
(Brainerd, MN)

My eye doctor tells me that recent studies suggest that the Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil may help prevent MD.

He said that in fact the fish oil is a better source of Omega 3 than other sources such as flax seed. Any thoughts on this?

REPLY

Hi Kurt,

I am so glad to hear that your physician has recommended fish oil. We do in fact take Carlson's fish oil everyday.

Wet Macular Degeneration - How Much Fish Oil

by Karen
(Chandler)

How many mgs. of fish oil should I be taking daily. I have the left eye with wet macular degeneration.

REPLY

Hi Karen,

This is an important question. The Age Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS) is a multi-center randomized trial of approximately 4,200 participants designed to assess the effects of oral supplementation of

10 mg lutein and

2 mg zeaxanthin (1 tablet)

350 mg DHA and 650 mg EPA (2 soft-gel capsules)

for the treatment of and the development of age related macular degeneration and cataract.

The participants will be followed for 5 years. At this time there are no study results. There is much more research on the effects of including fish regularly in one's diet. To find out about omega-3 research click here:

How Much Fish Oil

by Greta
(Florida, US)

My eye doctor has recommended that I start taking fish oil. How much should I take?

Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Kind regards,

Greta

REPLY

Hi Greta,

As you know there are lots of benefits to taking fish oil supplements. The amount we take and the ratio of omega-3's to omega-6s is also important. You must lower your intake of omega-6's to optimize the benefits of omega-3's.

The AREDS2 (Age Related Eye Disease Study 2) formula contains 1,000 mg total of DHA plus EPA.
So the general recommendation is to take at least that amount.

I am glad to hear that your eye doctor is recognizing the importance of fish oil for healthy maculas.

What About Krill Oil?

by Shirley
(New Jersey)

Hello Leslie,

Thank you for all your helpful tips. Do you know if krill oil provides the same omega 3 benefits as fish oil?

REPLY

Hello Shirley,

The most important part of omega-3 fatty acids are EPA and DHA.

Approximately 50% of your brain is made up of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as a significant
portion of the retina making it a essential nutrient for eye and brain health.

Both Krill and Fish Oil are important sources of both (though fish oil is much higher than Krill
oil in omega-3 fatty acids comparing 1:1 mg dosages).

To date, there are numerous peer review studies proving the benefits of supplementing with fish oil, but almost no human studies using Krill oil, or comparing it to the results of omega-3 fatty acids (there was one study in 2004 that did show krill oil effective in reducing total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density
lipoprotein (LDL)as compared to omega-3 fatty acids.

(Altern Med Rev. 2004 Dec;9(4):420-8.
Bunea R, El Farrah K, Deutsch L. Department of Internal Medicine, McGill University, Montreal,
Quebec, Canada).

Krill oil does contain astaxanthin (as well as small amounts of Vitamins A, E and D), an excellent antioxidant for the eyes, but given the high cost of Krill oil, I am not convinced there is enough evidence to justify supplementing with Krill oil over a high quality omega-3 fatty acid formula such as Carlsons Fish Oil and Nordic Natural (one can supplement with
astaxanthin separately) in higher dosages than those provided in Krill oil.

Thanks for your question.
