Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency

True essential fatty acid deficiency is not that common, however most people do not get enough essential fatty acids.

Low Omega 3

In fact some sources say up to 99% of our population is low in omega 3s. Why is that? EFAs are fatty acids that cannot be made by the body. We can only get them through the food we eat. Because it has become increasingly more difficult to get EFAs in the American diet we are seeing many health conditions that can benefit from supplementing with omega-3s.

There are two main types of omegas:

1. omega-3s - (linolenic acid) found in wheat, walnuts, fish raised naturally

2. omega-6s - (linoleic acid) found in most processed foods, but especially nuts and seeds, and refined oils

There are several conditions that may indicate a person is low in omega-3s. They are:

Depression

Cardiovascular Disease

Type 2 Diabetes

Fatigue

Dry, itchy skin

Brittle hair and nails

Inability to concentrate

Joint pain

Consider supplementing your diet with fish oil capsules or liquid fish oil to get the correct amount and right ratio of healthy fats in your diet.

How Much Fish Oil?

Often, people don't experience the health benefits of fish oil if they are not taking the correct servings or taking it daily.

It is important to read your omega 3 capsules bottle to find out how many servings a day you should take. The brand we use requires 2 fish oil tablets per day. I consistently take mine, my husband on the other hand ....

For better absorption take your fish oil with your meal. To make things a bit more complicated the ratio of omega-3s to omega-6s in our diet also affects the benefits we experience from taking fish oils.

Omega 3 fish oil should contain the maximum amount of EPA and DHA fats. To learn more about how much fish oil is recommended click here: How Much Fish Oil?
