Electronic Magnifier

An electronic magnifier is one of the most helpful vision aids for macular degeneration.

Desktop Magnifier

Low Vsion CCTV

As your macular degeneration progresses you will need different magnifiers for different tasks. However, electronic magnifiers provide several benefits over traditional glass magnifiers.

1. Adjustable Magnification

2. Larger Field of View

3. Adjustable Contrast

Low Vision Technology

The cost of these magnifiers can range from $200 to over $3000.

If it serves the purpose you are buying it for, it will be well worth it.

Before making a large purchase consider meeting with a low vision rehab specialist before you purchase.

They can assess your needs and then make recommendations for the best magnifiers for you. They can also provide training in using low vision technology.

If you must make your own best decisions, then purchase a video magnifier that has a free trial period so that you can try it at home and see how it works for you.

Low Vision CCTV

Another form of electronic magnification is through a closed circuit television (CCTV).

A CCTV magnifier is for people who need text and photos magnified, but find that their current optical magnifiers are no longer meeting their needs.

low vision cctv The benefits of this type of electronic magnifier are:

1. A Larger Viewing Field - up to 22"

2. Adjustable Magnification - up to 75X and

3. Adjustable Contrast- Black on White, White on Black and other high contrast color combinations

This type of desktop magnifier uses a small TV camera that actually sits inside a hand-held "mouse."

The camera also incorporates a zoom lens which allows the level of magnification to be adjusted.

The magnified image is displayed on a large screen monitor in full color or enhanced black and white.

The "camera" mouse has rollers so it is easy to scan over text or difficult-to-read items such as medicine bottles, cans, cooking instructions, etc., to be magnified easily.
