E Book Reader
An E Book Reader incorporates some great low vision technology such as reduced glare, crisp clear letters, good contrast and font magnification.
Best Ebook Reader for Low Vision

The best e book reader for those with macular degeneration are going to be the ones with the largest screen size, the highest number of font magnifcations, the screens with the best contrast and no glare and easy navigation. For those who are "computer challenged" it is better to buy a wireless reader that uses a cell phone signal to download the book rather than one that needs to be hooked up to the computer to get any ebook downloads.
Another feature to consider is the navigation and ease of use. The Barnes and Noble Nook is coming out with a color touch screen for easy navigation. The Sony e book reader has a black and white touch screen, but there have been some complaints about the glare produced by this model. Not everyone with macular degeneration can use or benefit from this low vision technology. It may be too technical for those who are older and are not comfortable with trying new things. However, if it allows someone to keep reading, these devices are certainly worth a try. Be sure to check out the return policy before purchasing. The Kindle has a good return policy since you can't try it without buying it. The Sony electronic book reader is found in any store that carries electronics so a person can try it before purchasing. When the Nook comes out it will be available to try at your local Barnes and Noble store.
Electronic Book Readers
The three main models of electronic book readers are:Amazon's Kindle Sony Electronic Book Reader Barnes and Noble Nook (coming in January 2010)
Sony Electronic Book Reader
The Sony Electronic Book Reader has some features that the Kindle does not. There are several models available including a new touch screen model. Click here to learn more:

Kindle Reader
The Kindle Reader comes in two sizes - the Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX. The larger the screen the better for those with macular degeneration or low vision. With larger fonts, less of the page is viewed so a larger screen will help accommodate this. The benefit of the Kindle Reader is that there is no need for a computer - you can download a book anywhere there is a cell phone signal. Barnes and Noble Nook
Barnes and Noble is coming out with their version of the popular e-book readers. They will not be available until after Christmas. The expected ship date is January 15, 2010. What makes it unique compared to the Kindle and the Sony Ebook reader is the easy to use color touch screen for easy navigation. Unlike Amazon's Kindle, once they become available, you will be able to go to a Barnes and Noble Store to try it before you buy it. To find out why this may be the best ebook reader click here:
