The best e book reader for those with macular degeneration are going to be the ones with:
1. The Largest Screen Size
2. The Highest Number of Font mMgnifications
3. Anti-glare Screen
4. Adjustable Contrast
5. Easy Navigation
6. Easy eBook Reader Downloads
Wireless Reading Device
For those who are "computer challenged" it is better to buy a wireless reading device that uses a cell phone signal to download the book rather than a book reader that needs to be hooked up to a computer to get any ebook downloads.
The Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX, the Barnes and Noble Nook and some of the Sony readers are wireless readers. This means that ebooks can be directly downloaded to the ebook reading device.
The Barnes and Noble Nook came out with a color touch screen for easy navigation. The Sony e book reader has a black and white touch screen, but there have been some complaints about the glare produced by this model.
Not everyone with macular degeneration can use or benefit from this low vision technology. It may be too technical for those who are older and are not comfortable with trying new things.
However, if it allows someone to keep reading, these devices are certainly worth a try. Be sure to check out the return policy before purchasing.
The Kindle has a good return policy since you can't try it without buying it.
The Sony electronic book reader is found in any store that carries electronics so a person can try it before purchasing.
You can try out the Barnes and Noble Nook at your nearby Barnes and Noble store. Just go to their information booth and ask an employee for assistance.

Kindle Reader
The Kindle Reader comes in two sizes - the Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX. The larger the screen the better for those with macular degeneration or low vision. With larger fonts, less of the page is viewed so a larger screen will help accommodate this. The benefit of the Kindle Reader is that there is no need for a computer - you can download a book anywhere there is a cell phone signal.
