Dry Macular Degeneration -

by Shirley
(Melbourne, Australia)

I have very recently been diagnosed with dry macular

degeneration which seemed to appear very suddenly -
prior to not needing glasses for several years
following cataract sugery. I am in my mid 70s.

The condition so far is only affecting my left eye, as
far as I am aware. I have just started taking
Astaxanthin, and also Macu-Vision. I am wondering
whether this condition will spread to my other eye,
and how one prevents the dry becoming the wet
MD, and what is known about above supplements and
whether they are helping others.
Thank you.

Hi Shirimaure,

Macular degeneration does not spread - it develops because of other underlying physical causes - such as genetics, chronic inflammation, poor diet, smoking, or high blood pressure. Your other eye may develop dry AMD because of these common causes of AMD.

Diet and lifestyle may affect the progression of AMD. You can read more about it here:

Preventing Wet AMD
by: Sue

Hi - I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. I write here for my mother who has dry AMD and was diagnosed when she was 50 years old. She is now 89 years old.

From the start, she immediately followed a very healthy retina diet which consisted of lots of green leafy vegetables, fruits, other veggies and an anti-inflammatory diet. She was really ahead of her time with this. Almost 40 yrs later, she has experienced some change in her vision, but still gets along quite well. I must caution that if you are on Coumadin as a blood thinner, that green leafy vegetables are not recommended in large amounts because of the clotting factor.

My mother was able to switch to Eliquis and has no dietary restrictions with this blood thinner. She was not going to give up on her vegetables! So with this, she is still in dry AMD and continues to maintain this to this day. I hope this helps.
