I suggested he get a desktop magnifier for most of his reading and use the lighted hand held magnifier for spot magnifying - like quickly reading a label or a prescription bottle. Now he can read with his hands free without having to constantly adjust the distance of the magnifier for clear reading. Before making your purchase consider what task you will be using it for and what power magnification you need. Then decide if you want to do most of your reading, writing, etc at your desk - if so then invest in a good desktop magnifier. A magnifying desk lamp is great to have at the desk where you go through your mail, do your bills or balance your checkbook. Be sure the company has a good return policy so that if it the lamp doesn't meet your magnification needs you can return it.
